I was looking for advice for camping in Lancelin Friday/Saturday of the long weekend? Did a search (forum and Google) and there is little info, is it a matter of find a good spot up or down the beach (I have a 4WD) or is that no longer allowed? I imagine the caravan parks are booked out well in advance

Most local govt write their bylaws to prohibit camping anywhere without permission from the land owner. That includes beach and bush. The rangers usually check the obvious spots on the beach and 4WD dunes area, so if you are going to rough it when you find a good spot ignore it and go a bit further.

It might be worth trying your luck at the caravan sites. There are two in lano.
Otherwise you could rough it, but as Chris said , go somewhere discrete (ie not back beach...)

rangers will be out, this is their big weekend.

If the caravan parks realy are booked out there was a park the shire used as overflow area, so just rock up Im sure it will get sorted
