Hi - I am new to this forum - and there is a reason for this......I am planning on moving to WA for a 12 month or so period and am looking at where would be best for the best kitesurf, sailing & of course people!. I met with great couple who recommended Lancelin as they are based near there - and also noted Margaret River was good.

I'd love to hear your views on this - Windfinder statistics suggest that: Yallingup/Cape Naturaliste & Cape Leeuwin are the best for wind record?

I'm also coming to WA for about 12 months starting this November/December, purely for kitesurfing. Haven't sorted out accommodation yet but I'm definitely up for living with kiters!

Wind Record? It's gotta be Exmouth 256km/hr 22/3/99

There is consistent winds along the coast where to go depends on what type of kiting you are looking for

If you are looking for very big waves and strong winds then along the Margaret River strip is good but I have one word you need to remember - unforgiving meaning you get it right or horribly wrong.

If you are looking for swell and good waves than lancelin which is about 1.5 hours north of the city. It has both flat water and swells this is because it is based on a reef set up so at the beach it is flat then you sail out around 1 km past the reef and into the swell. As it is based on reef there are plenty of breaks which means flat spots to get out to the back again without having to handle the white water. If something goes wrong then you are a long way off the coast and on a cross on shore then you end a long way up the coast and a long walk home if you get in trouble but once you are past the reef it is at least flat water.

If you want big wind and good swells then go to Geralton which is around 450km north of perth which will have 20-30 knots most days.

If you stay in Perth the swell is crap as it is mostly shore dump so what most people do are down winders that is the place a car about 10km north of where they intend to start, they then drive down wind a long the coast and launch many km's south of the recovery car. You then surf 10-20km of small surf faces and learn well. If you get in trouble in between then you are a long way from both cars. Downwinders are what most people do in Perth and the beaches are packed with people do this.

Perth is great for the wind, I moved here for kiting and have loved it so far. Theres seriously tons of coast line and heaps of beaches. I live in fremantle and its really close to several kite spots.No matter where you go everyones really friendly here and its all good!!

here's my thoughts on your request - move to "FREEMANTLE" :D

What is your current level of kitesurfing?
Do you prefer wave-riding or freestyle?
These two qs will affect where you will move.

Freemantle (or commonly known as 'Freo') is a social hub with lots of places to visit & lots to do.
There is a place 10mins south of Freo called, Woodman's Point, or Woodies.
This is where most of the international riders will come kite if they are in Perth.
It's flatwater paradise :D
In summer time it's the most popular spot with the consistent 'Freemantle doctor' winds blowing.
Too easy!

As above people have mentioned - if you want waves - Margaret River (close to above mentioned Cape Naturaliste etc) & Lancelin are your best bet - but each are respectively 3hours or an hour drive from the city of Perth.

That's why I reckon Freo will be your best bet - for friends, places to visit & best kite spots nearby.
But let me know what your current level is at & if you prefer wave/freestyle.
