Seems we had another kite in the power lines at Altona.

It was a beginner who'd been out for about 3 hours. He was doing okay, up and riding, with the usual walk of shame between runs. I didn't see the actual incident itself, but from what someone described, he got in trouble pulled his QR and didn't have a leash attached because the kite disappeared in the powerlines with some sparks before heading over to the houses.

Result - Firetruck, cops, road closures while they fixed it etc. Not good for keeping kiting going at Altona either way and the second in just over a month.

Do people these days (apart from waveslave) ride without a leash? Sh!T.

Bad news.

We're assuming that at this stage. From what the guy who saw it happen said, he disconnected from the kite. There is also a chance he pulled the QR and still had problems and then released off the leash as well.

^^^^ Yep, hard to know unless you get the info from the actual guy.

It's not the guy I was thinking about. If he really was in the poo and had to pull his safety then there's not much you can do, as long as know one was injured thats the main thing.
But last Saturday on the 30+ s/e, there was a beginner out with no safety attached because it had "broke". What are people thinking going out with broken safety's?!
We have enough trouble here without this type of thing happening.

There was another one at the Apex park end also, Only saw the aftermath of the kite hangin over the lines into the yard of a house.
They got the kite down , with no police etc and (plenty of on lookers though) when i was leaving they were climbing up the pine tree with a aluminium ladder to get to the lines in the trees.
Not sure if this is the same one you are talking of. After we left the cops and fireys may have been called though.

Nah, this one was definitely fire engines, police etc. I didn't see it but the fire engines arrived about 5 minutes after it happened and I saw that. The police stuck around for an hour or so while they closed the street so the power guys could fix the lines.

2 in one day is pretty poor.

Another two lost kites at Altona today (Monday 15 Feb). One in the pine trees (which at least stopped it hitting the power lines) and the other blown into the barrier poles in front of the car park close to the pier.

I was in the water at the time so I do not know what happened - both were launching.

WTF are these people doing? Did anyone see what happened?

3 kites, 3 days is a bit friggen much. By the time I get back from my op in November all the good spots will be banned.

Its a sign o the times, lots more blow ins at Altona this year than others - reckon its learners taught at St Kilda and looking for somewhere to kite that isnt full of heroes and other learners.

Mate launched a kiter twice today and both times kite went into the trees...god only knows what the kiter piloting the kite was doing?

Don't know the answer - just can see its gonna end in tears

Time to look for a new "secret spot" - and no its not the dog beach

I'm quite happy with them going into the trees. Its when they start heading towards the powerlines that the bans are gonna happen. The irony today was the tree hugger wasn't a cabrinha for a change. It was a GK (i think)

Noticed some a group of euro's last saturday at Altona that looked like they knew what they were doing but i don't think they did.

First of all I got a launch of this one guy. As he sits the kite up there is tension in the lines and as i'm checking that my lines are clear, he just suddenly releases my kite. No thumbs up or nothing, just me poking my head around to see if it's all good and then suddenly having to direct my kite up.

And then one of them was nice enough to land me. he looked experienced but I was surprised when he grabbed my front bridle to catch the kite and then tries to turn it over with the end of the wing tip. Wasn't too happy as it's a new kite and I wanted to say something but didn't have the balls.

I went to launch another euro guy earlier that day and I had the kite on it's back as I was walking away from him. He hooks in, I then put it on it's side as you do to launch and the kite powered up a bit pushing me to the side of the window and down wind slightly. As it's pushing me down wind and across the guy just keeps following me. I figure he's just checking his lines but after a while i finally realise he didn't have a clue what he was doing. I had to tell him to walk back to get some tension in the lines before finally launching him.

These three instances all happened from one group of euros (assume they were together). Oh, and at the end of the session i see a different guy (same euro group) just dive his kite hard down to the ground to only just be caught by another person on the beach. I don't think they were expecting it at all.

Don't think any one of these 4 french dudes knew what they were doing that day although i do believe all 4 could actually stand up on a board.

It's hard to know who to trust on the beach!

Yeah, another hit tonight, another powerline, another ambulance. I think it was a slingshot but I wasn't really focussing on it after how hard the guy hit the concrete. Hopefully he's okay but he looks like he got away lucky with a bit of a concussion and some scratches and bruises.

Not much better there. A mate of mine had dinner at a steak restaurant in St Kilda and witnessed douchbag kiters in front of the sea baths again. Someone needs to walk down and cut their lines.

That could be the only way to stop those idiots, the green Cabrinha was again showing off within meters off the Pier this arwo, perhaps he think hes Andy Yates.
Still boring in comparison to Altona.

They could be from abroad and if there are no signs then what?

Maybe posters should be put in hostels? that is not an easy task to do, the better
way is to post signs on the beach and enforce the law.

It's not hard to ask a local. It's not like you can't find any in StK.

At the end of the day, it's bay boating rules so no signs required, boating water markers are sufficient to fine, and common sense says you don't kite amongst swimmers.

Common sense also says kite where 99.9 % others kite so no signs are required for anybody with half the brain, people with less than half cant be helped anyway.

Brighton has its share of excitement too...

Was watching a group of 3 euros in todays 20 knot northerly which was fairly gusty at times, the first one survived then the second who clearly has never ever been strapped into a kite or I reckon has ever even flown one has a shot at a 9m on a reasonably crowded beach. It landed within meters of other beach goers.

I found it funny initially and then realized it could've been a very serious situation.

Personally I never kited in front of the Sea baths, but did not know what all the non-boating fuss is about either.
Certainly you see some buoys, but I used to interpret them as "watch out boaters, outside this area, the water gets too shallow for you". Since I can kite in 5cm deep water, I did not see much relevance for me.
There are further aspects that distinguishes us from boats, like a much smaller wake, no noise or pollution - so I did not see a 1:1 relevance of those rules for me. It is like with bikes and cars I guess, where for certain reasons you allow one and forbid the other in some places, but might also forbid both in certain areas.

And definitely, an area packed with swimmers would be such an application. However you don't have swimmers in winter, so a general ban of kiting for that reason would not make sense either.

So if someone kites in front of the sea baths, I would not necessarily assume ignorance as a reason, because there is a lot of gray area with those boating markers, and they are treated differently in many spots.
So posting signs on the beach would make sense I think, and if they are ignored, there is still room for further actions.
