Forecast for strong westerlies this weekend, but of course you all know that already

Question is wheres the spot between sunshine coast and point danger ideally. Welington point? I'm considering getting the ferry from Cleveland across to straddie and kiting just south of dunnwich or getting the bus up to amity. thoughts, recommendations?

Wellington point would be my last option.... out of desperation .

Maybe red barge?

Wheres red barge? I think I will try the small beach just south of dunwich. I've been there on the boat and it looks pretty ideal. If anyone else is keen feel free to meet me over there.

I assume he means the Big Red Cat - to get over there. Think it would be a good day, easy walk from the ferry terminal, only $10, something different - thinking seriously about this too? Only issue may be old oyster leases at low tide. I have only been in there in a yacht and quite a few moon ago there was leases at the southern end of that bay. In front of the camp ground is all clear.

However I would like to know why Wello is only "in desperation"? Straddie would be a full day which I struggle to get.

Wello for me is the last option, only if I am desperate, $500+ fine hanging on your head ( there are council signs saying "No Kites" penalties apply, you have to pump up on water line because of that, annoying rocks on the bottom, far from GC (I live in Burleigh), did I mention the fine ?

Red barge is so ****. You only get like 300m of clean air. When i was still a noob i tried there one time. It was 30 knots then about 2 knots then back to 30. Waste of time.

Red barge on a straight westerly is really reserved for the desperate 2nd season kiter

Have kited at the red barge and was great ! perfect flat water behind the sand bar . large boats to stay clear of . big ebb tide.
Theres also the rowing lake up near oxenford , I havent kited there but have talked to 1 who did , he said it was ok .

Just moved to Brisbane 3 days ago. Am I correct that Sandgate and Brighton beach are no good with west winds? I am fairly new, still working on going upwind. Any suggestions for where the best places to go would be (either in West winds htis weekend or in the future with different winds) that are within an hour of Brisbane?

yeah I considered doing bribie. its a bit further from me than straddie though.

I ended up going to deanbilla bay (the bit 5 mins walk south of the ferry terminal) with another guy. Had heaps of space because it was all to ourselves. We got there on high tide so it wasn't great, not much beach to rig up on and the water drops off deep fairly quickly. It would have been much better in a lower tide. The wind was ok over there, 20 - 25 knots I'd say, but fairly gusty at times, Definitely not the worst wind i have kited tho. Worth doing if its a westerly. Glad I had my wetsiut on today

Sandgate and Brighton are out. Woody point however is an option if you cant be bothered driving to bribie. Just follow hornibrook esp. It has a rocky bottom and it is pretty choppy, but a session nonetheless.

Thanks. And these would both be suitable for beginners?

I'd say that woody point isn't suited to beginners - you have to launch/land ur kite in a carpark then walk with it at 12 to the rocky beach (booties are recommended) whilst dodging cars & light posts - not much fun especially once it gets over 20 knots. it's not too bad once in the water, however there's usually no beach, just a rock wall then the road. also if you kite out too far past the jetty and something goes wrong the next stop is moreton island 20km away or ditching your gear and swimming against the wind back to shore. Perfect spot for beginners really :)

Just had a awesome day at poverty point Bribie Island on the westerly today! A bit tricky landing and launching but a great spot! You also need a permit and 4wd to get in here.

Desperate is what this whole thread is about

I've thought about it a few times, reckon it's doable if you stayed up the southern end where the empty lots are. Pretty embarresing if you had to cut loose from your kite though, you would be sure to take out a few latte toting soccer mums and their schnauzers.

All of QLD is fooked by these winds. Cairns looks to have something but topping 15knots at best. Anyone have a report from Ant's place up Cooktown?

These Westerlies are killing me!

On the Sunny coast (for desperado,s only).

NW - Mooloolaba up by the spit.

SW - Happy Valley with in coming tide.

I find westerlies always cold + super choppy & rarely worth the effort, (Except for NW at DI).
