Whao - this thread has some fire. But I am not going to get involved with the discussion, nor will I mention any names. I am very happy with my buy and the services I got. Seem to be a lot of territorial hatred here. Very sad to see. As Bigwavedave said, keep the business in the shops.

Demo days will keep going i hope as long as all the business involved understand that no one is out to ruin them. Kiting is getting more popular by the season and there is plenty of business to go round without shonky tactics. The shops and the kiting community need to BE NICE to each other or council bans will happen. If we are seen to not have our **** together amongst ourselves then how do we expect the authorities to take us serious. Demo days for all shops are necessary to there business and they should all be able to conduct them without bias. If you go to buy a surfboard you are paying an average of $500 to $1000 but if your buying a new kiting kit your looking at up to and over $3000 so it is good to be able to try before you buy. Thats just my overall opinion and im sure there will be knockers but if your in business for yourself you would understand.

-If you want to have a demo day, apply to council for a temporary permit
-If you do it the right way, other businesses cannot complain.
-There is no such thing as a 'social day' if a business is promoting its product in an area designated as public space.
-Even club days need a permit, and if a business wants to sponsor a club day, they also need a permit.

Commercial use of public space for product demonstrations is not included in most council permits for schools.

valid points. any organised activity on public space (roads, park, beach) requires Council permission, and may require other approvals. at the minimum Council will require proof of public liability insurance, and most likely indemnity of Council's responsibility. 'Events' organised with the intent of financial gain (i.e. a demo day) or where a fee is charges to the public (i.e. a club day) will most likely require a fee payable to Councils. If a club obtained a permit for a 'club day' it would be prudent to request that permit include permission to allow sponors to be present without the need for those sponsors to obtain further permits. In general Councils will allow sponsorship at an event, hell, they'd be hypocritical if they didn't. Demonstrations being included in school permits would depend on the permit; some may, some may not. If a business is located within a COuncil that is supportive then chances are the permit will be open to additional 'events' that are in the public's interest (a demo day may be in the public's interest).

Please don't regard this as legal advice, as it is not and I am not qualified to do so. Merely tacit knowledge and experience.

PS; there was an initial question about beaches open; those in Redcliffe/Bribie are open http://www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/search.aspx?terms=beaches

So does that mean we need a permit for the club day at Brighton tomorrow?

We have a permit of the BBQ tomorrow ,the shop demo's are another storey, the Brisbane Kite club has no involvement in commercial ventures ie shop demo's or events.(these are organised by the shops,we just put on a feed) .Because of the friction at Sandgate the other day.. All demo/event permits have been suspended until furthur notice ,( this is by the council and Port of Brisbane) ,we have to have a meeting with council and port of Brisbane,to find out our future permit obligations .

The Planned AGM for the Kite Club will have to be adjourned to a later date as I have just been informed there may have been a mix up with the notification to all members, that and the fact that the weather and wind is on the downward slide,we are not expecting a big enough turn out to get the numbers for an AGM.
The notice will be sent to all Brisbane Kite Club financal members notifing all parties of the proposed new date and venue for the AGM. I apologise for any inconvienience this may have incured, there is no use calling a AGM unless all members are notified. We will still be putting on a fund raising BBQ if the rain holds back ..

Pres. Brisbane Kite Club..

maybe, maybe not...Please don't regard this as legal advice, as it is not and I am not qualified to provide legal advice.
If I was looking at doing a 'group event' on a public space and read the information I provided above I would certainly give the local council a ring, just to be certain. Even though you may think not, an event such as last week's get together at Sandgate, does restrict access and usage of that section of the beach from 'non-group' members. BCC provides following information on the booking parks & gardens, although it does not mention beaches on this page www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/facilities-recreation/parks-gardens/index.htm
FYI some beaches in BCC are still closed www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/community-support/emergency-management/flooding/index.htm
MBRC does refer to 'staging events on council owned spaces' www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/discover.aspx?id=5969 using this list to qualify something as an event www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/discover.aspx?id=73179 and following application form refers to 'forshore' in the terms and conditions www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/uploadedFiles/common/forms/parks-foreshores/Parkland%20Foreshore%20Event%20Booking.pdf and mentions most of what I & the other posters I quoted wrote previously.

Please do not regard this as legal advice, as it is not and I am not qualified to provide legal advice.

^^^ It may not be legal advice, but you've certainly done your research.

What happens if I'm demoing a kite and get stung by a blue blubber? Can I make a claim?

Will demo days go underground? Will we all have to meet at South Mimms Servo and wait for a test message to find out the location?

I've done a few events of my own, I also own a business so I'm used to asking/receiving legal & other advice (whether I like or not) from people who know more than I do. The info from BCC & MBRC was a matter of typing a few key words into their search engines.

What happens if I'm demoing a kite and get stung by a blue blubber? Can I make a claim?

A claim against who? Anyway, I doubt it, but don't consider this legal advice, it is not & I am not qualified to provide legal advice. Read through the fine print of your kiting insurance, if in doubt call them and wait on the phone 40 minutes to speak with someone who will tell you NO or to read your policy.

where is the South Mimms Servo, when I get there send me a test message so I know if it works
