What is this 'more freedom than boots' thing?
There's heaps of different types of boots out now that offer a variety of stiffness levels in ankle movement. Liquid Force alone has five different options of kite specific boots with various open/closed toe, lace/velcro straps and ankle flex options.
Not only that, but there are so many options around for great straps that it seems a little half baked to... eh, half bake some strappy-boots like the Joint's appear to be. Cabrinha were pushing the Sync's as backless boots originally which IMO was a silly idea. That said it did instigate a lot of discussion and got lots of people to try them out. I was riding Sync's for a year and loved their clamping top & sides of the foot style.
A few companies over the years have included heel straps with their pads/straps, but everyone thought they were a bit dorky. Why now if they make them look like oversized Birkenstock's is it ok?
Try some boots. You'll probably like them.
