Hey all I'm new to kiteboarding and looking at getting a setup. Possibly a 10.5 RRD kite. What are your oppinions on RRD gear? I weigh bout 87 kg and live in Perth. Any other suggestions ? Cheers

I tried one of these in Perth for a few hours. Seems like a high quality kite. At first it was real twitchy and overpowered (stalling) and very hard to go upwind because my brother had it set up wrong. Put lots, lots more depower on and it was great. No flapping, still good jumps. The bar pressure is higher than what I'm used to but I have a 9m Instinct edge 2, which is super light.

I weigh 70kgs and it was probably a little overpowered in 25knots but you should be fine at your weight.

Its probably not the best kite to learn on though, its not as forgiving as my instinct and harder to go upwind. With a little experience though, it could be great. How much are you looking to spend? I can't recommend Ozones enough.

I bought the missus an 07 hyper type II, worst kite in history. What was I thinking when I bought it??? May have been drunk on Brugal

Twitchy, unresponsive, unpredictable power etc.

Wish it was biodegradeable so I could put it in my compost heap.

Maybe the newer ones are a bit more refined????

obesssions are much nicer than the hyper type's . I have a 10.5 mkII obsession and 13.5 MKIII obsession and love both kites

Hey Chris M, send me your email address and I'll give you the details of a totally custom bridle I put on my Hypertype. In stock form it is rubbish, but it comes up really well with a bridle change.

Even better you can use 90% of the existing bridle.

My Brothers kite was a hyper type II now that I read the name. It was a bit of a nasty kite until it was tuned right.

Joeyy, maybe you should go for more of a secondhand beginner kite from the buy and sell section. You can trash it and not cry too much when it pops. As long as you get something in the right size range (10-11m) that is easy to relaunch, depower and fly, you should be ok for a season or two and then you'll know what you want. Its a good time to buy a second hand kite as everyone will be upgrading about now.

I can only recommend a couple kites due to low experience but can unrecommend a couple that I hated.
good to learn on:
T3 (so, so easy)
Ozone instinct (more rewarding)
Bad:
Best waroo, Bularoo
I've tried a couple of Cabrinahs and didn't like them. I think its due to the pulleys in the bridle and massive depower throw. When you crash you have to pull in a lot of line to get the bar back in your hands.

If you see another couple kites that you are considering then why don't you ask on here again for more opinions.

The RRD kites is really fast and I don't think it really is a good beginner kite.

I would recommend the Switchblade. In the 9m and 10m size they aren't too fast, they have good lift, are pretty easy to to relaunch, also they are easy to resell.

You also could try the Kahoona which is one of the easiest kite to relaunch. I started on Kahoona V1 and they were so easy to use. It helped me progress really fast. The V1 wasn't really stable in gusty weather and it had a lot of bar pressure but the V4 have really improved.

I tried the V4 last weekend and wow it really is a great kite. THe speed is Ok not too fast and the kite is really stable, has good gust response, bar pressure is now ok and the quality looks top notch. One of the best deal on the market.

The airush Lithium is another pearl, easy to relaunch, good lift, nice bar pressure. It is really a fun kite that does pretty much anything.

have fun

There is a plenty of all rounder which would suit beginners to advanced riders on the market.

The RRD Obsession is way to fast and definitely not suitable for beginners. Moreover, I don't think there is a swivel on the bar (I might be wrong but if there is one it's not efficient at all).

For someboby about your weight I would go for a Core XR, easy relaunch, good depower and various settings available.

I think AKS sell them and the guys over there are very experienced riders that would give you some serious advices.
