Hi guys,

I'm relatively new to the sport, been at it for the past 18 months at every opportunity & have been riding 7 & 10 mtr Griffin Argos & a 17mtr Trx. I'm 70-75kg & spend the majority of time on a 132 Shinn Monk & a 5'10 short board for lighter wind & surf.

More recently I've been bitten by the boosting bug & am keen to pick up a couple of Edges for more speed & height. My first thought was to try grab a 7mtr & 10mtr edge but having read through a pile of old threads, most of the people riding 7s have been wishing for an 8. I have found that i'm not careful controlling my 7 in gusty conditions I will fall like a bag of spuds from higher jumps & in most of the threads people seem to say the same thing about the Edges. I'm wondering if any you have had the opportunity to fly the new 8mtr edge & you could give any feedback? I'm not so keen to ask my local store for a demo as I'm a cheap skate & will be buying second hand. I'll probably hold on the kites I already have for the odd day in the surf so I guess the question is, @75kg's should I try grab a 7 & 10mtr edge, or go for an 8 & 11mtr edges?

Many thanks in advance!
Ant.

at 82kg I would go Go 10, 7 combo. but it will depend on your local wind conditions.

I have 13m and 10m edge. I'm looking for a 7 also.

The 10m is such a magic size. Man it boosts to the moon with awesome glide.

10 edge for my weight is sweeeeeeeeet 18-25 knots. Of course you can take it higher and lower. But those winds are the gravy for me.

PS the edge does not drop you like a bag of ****. it lands you sweetly.

Sounds like your a board-off local that likes to make the kite spot congested. typical ozone edge rider i guess

Owned the 7 and 9s over the years, always thought an 8 would be a great size, had a change last year but still have a play on the edges, smooth power,

I've got an 8m 2014 edge and it boosts fine, hasn't fallen out of the sky yet. It's a real powerful kite.

I have a similar issue, love boosting on flat water but now getting into waves. The option for me (at 75kg) is an Edge 11m for boosting and a Rio 9m for waves or do you compromise and go something like a Pivot 11 & 9m? Any comments please?

Big boosting, stable, great free riding, formula racing and quality construction as you all ready know. I would go a 10m definitely, edge 10 is very special and an 8 for sure. 6,8,10 is the magic number. I sell them and they are my personal choices.

I replaced my 7, 9 and 11m Edges for 7, 9 and 11m Pivots. I love boosting and find the Pivots not that different to the Edges. The hang time is good too and very stable in the air. As the Pivots drift they are good for the waves as well. The Ozone bar is still my favourite. I also enjoy not having to do every trick at a million miles per hour like you do on the race horse Edge. I found that my Reo 8 and 10m were fantastic in the waves but I had trouble jumping (probably my poor technique but still an issue for me). Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input guys. Live in Melbourne but only for the last 12 months so probably not the most qualified to guess average winds but summer felt like mainly 15-25knts & winter's stretching its legs up to 30-35 with the odd stronger front. Based off that, grabbing the 8 is probably the smarter move because it better fills the gap between the 7 & 10 I already have.
Brohan, I'll get in touch about your 8mtr mate.
Plummet, you definitely give the 10 a good rap. Curious if you've ever had a run on the 11mtr? Over summer there were days I wished I had a 12 & thought the 11 edge might be a good fit. Will ponder that a little more but in the mean time, will get serious about picking up an 8. Seems like a good starting point.
Cheers & thanks again all.

Yep. I've had 2 x 11m edges. They are also fantastic. As you say it depends on your most common winds. The 11 moves the fun zone down a knot or 2. Either will work and it depends on what you want the rest of your quiver to look like.

I bought my 10m of one of the locals who then bought a 11m and 9m..... he's since got a 7 and 5m edges!!!.

If your hunkering for a 12m. Those are the days i'm on the 13 edge. Now i also have a 12m chrono too. But when i want to smash monster jumps 20-25 knots. I love the insanity of the 10m. Its Awesome. Sub 20 depends on the day depending on what kite i'll fire up. could be any one of the edges or chrono.

Thanks Thorn, I was kinda guessing it might be like that. Maybe seeing as I am just starting out the board in the waves I should go for the Pivot. The Edge sure is a fast beast. Also it keeps me in the same style of kite instead of mixing it up.
It looks like Plummet sticks to the same stlye of kite as well (apart from the Chrono). At the moment I'm on a 17m Zephyr, 11 Drifter, 9 & 7 Switchblade. Anyone have thoughts about mixing up kite styles in the quiver?

I failed to mention the rest of my quiver....

13 edge, 12 chrono, 10 edge, 8 catalyst, 6 Reo.

So I too run a mixed quiver. In the lighter winds we have smaller waves. I love to boost and glide so high aspect race kites are the go. Then as the wind builds i want to delve into the glory of the waves so i step down in aspect to get better wave performance.

The edge is awesome for jumping, upwind wave riding and cross off wave riding. But it sucks at drifting down the line cross on/on and also has a power lull and spike in the turns that prevents purist down the line wave riding. ....... I'm not a purist and love the feeling of being powered both by the wave and the kite. But when i get into 25+ knots and double head +waves I don't want the power lull/spike spike of the edge and need smoother power out of the turns in the waves.

Do people loop edges? I don't think those kites would suit me. I'm a go big and drop like a rock kinda guy.

Down loop, back loop But i don't kite loop the 10m. Maybe a 7 would? I don't have one of those yet.

Tear you off the water and kiteloop, drop like a stone is more the c4's game.

Yep. I ran the c4 for a few years for that style jumping. It is also cool fun ripping high then dropping fast to loop or hard redirect for a soft landing. But i faded back to Edge height and glide. I love the distance you get on the edge. You travel so far.

I wouldn't loop them, I've got an 8m and it rips you around and is real powerful throughout the loop, okay for downloops and stuff.
