Having spent hours & hours of these windless winter days updating on a whole summer season of not-so-new-now music releases I thought I may as well spend some more time-off-water spreading the news. This is just a few tit-bits of the stuff I found which someone may find interesting. If UR into metal or pop, bop & techno sign out now. If your passion is for all the ‘alternative’/’punk’/’rock’ stuff that fits in between these extremes then there may be something here worth reading.

No 1. Drop Kick Murphys
For those who don’t know them – its time you did. This is the all-time greatest indy-folk-punk group that ever was (IMO). A bunch of wild expat Irishmen from Boston got together a few years back & started pub gigs with a mix of their own brand of generically generated Boston based tales along with brilliantly punked-up covers of the traditional Irish folk ballads. They haven’t looked back. If catchy rhythms, clever lyrics & awesome, awesome, awesome drumming, set to what Id rate as about a ‘medium aspect’ punk is ur style then U2 will luvvv Drop Kick Murphys.
New Album – The Warriors Code puppet rating 11/10
It’s a tough call with so many great DKM albums already out there but this latest release may well be their best yet ? Too tough to call really. An expanded line up of instruments including pipes, violin, tin whistle & more makes Warriors Code absolutely un-turn-offable.
With a couple of new, to be expected, Irish folk covers, a range of original light(ish) punk up to one very short-fast-loud commentary on the CIA (which, btw, has all the hallmarks of a Vandals production) and the best, true to form cover of Eric Bogles classic ballad “Green Fields of France” (you may know it as the tale of Willie McBride ?) this album will blow you away.
Another Recent Release – The Singles Collection Volume 2
Plus a Vid – a massive 260 minutes of mayhem inc. the entire St Patricks Day concert, a madcap home movie of their antics on the latest world tour plus clips, interviews etc.
AND
The best thing is! If this is your intro to the group (they really haven’t got wide Oz recognition yet) you immediately have a whole library of back orders to add to your collection. But check track lists carefully – there is a lot of overlap amongst the releases.
ENJOY
NB: rumour is that Perth is about 1000 album sales away from being scheduled into DKM’s Oz tour later this year or early 06. If you feel the need to spread the joy give samples only – encourage sales – we want to see them in WA.

GARBAGE – Bleed Like Me puppet rating …hard call.. bout … 8/10
I had written this band off long ago thinking "hmmm...pretty aptly named!"
Gave them another chance when I heard the title track of this latest release on JJJ. Glad I did. This is a fantastic album – well I should say this album has some fantastic tracks – couldn’t say I like them all. Powerful vocals, great lyrics and a drummer that has to rate with the best in the world – even if there is some double tracking? But hey, who cares, long as it sounds good, and this certainly does.
Stuffed if I know how to describe it or what genre?? Seems to me that anything which doesn’t file away neatly into any of the style related genres these days is mindlessly dumped into the “punk” bin. That is certainly not the 'bin' for this 'garbage'. It is way too soft – almost melodious at times, way too PC lyrically, way too ….??? well I dunno but its definitely not punk. If they ever invent a “great-stuff-to-listen-to-while-cruising-around” genre then this latest from Garbage would go there.
Looking forward to revisiting their old stuff now. Either they have come of age or else I was way too hastily dismissive 1st time round. Worth checking out – this is good quality music.

WHITE STRIPES – Get behind Me Satan puppet rating – ? but going up
What more needs to be said – it’s a new release from the bro/sister act you either love or hate. If you’re a fan you just gotta go and get it (you probably already have). If ur not then this is not the album that will make you one.
Some fantastic tracks – no argument there - but as a total collection I am a tad disappointed. Its definitely a ‘grower’ though The more I listen the more I like. One thing is for sure - if you liked the bluegrassy/rockabilly? style of Hotel Yorga then ur gonna love Little Ghost (track 5) – it’s a ripper little ditty in similar redneck Yorga style.
Overall - I cant see tracks from this album featuring on next years kite vids.

FOO FIGHTERS – In Your Honour
More of the same from the FF’s - 4 sure. Definitely easily recognizable FF sound & style but IMO significantly better this time round.
If ur a fan you have probly got it. I have not been all that keen on them in the past but as it was out on special for $20 I reckoned this improved performance was worth buying – if only for a bit of variety on those long road trips north ! Worth a listen.

RED PHOENIX – Lonely With You – EP only
Havent heard this yet but I have high high hopes.
Red Phoenix is a new band put together by Oz rock legend – Doc Neeson.
For those of you too young to know !!!! (Im lucky - my dad told me about them ) Doc Neeson was the driving force behind the Angels. If ur still wondering ??? The Angels invented “Am I Ever Gonna See UR Face Again” OH that one ! Yeah OK u got it now.
The Angels were a core part of the Pub Rock scene in the late 60’s & 70’s and there are loads of other tracks that came from this band that you would also know but not necessarily know who did it 1st. It was all classic hard driven rock & roll. If Doc has stayed true to his distinctive basic rock style this may just be best Oz release of the year.
Cant wait to get into 78’s for a listen.

Oh well - if nothing else thats filled a few moments of mindless windless weather for me so nothing wasted even if it is a bit off the track of gear reviews.
Back to the arrows then ...... Oh No

For a couple of good aussie bands: -

I really can't go past the living end. great band. Every track is a good listen.

Another local act i'm a fan of is the boys (and girl) in sounds like chicken. Pirate-Punk/Ska/Hardcore/Reggae. Similar i guess to Mad Caddies or the voodoo glow skulls..
