Mulcoy model comes in 5'10 as the smallest size, I'm no expert but this seems a tad big for me at 67.5kg , 167cm.

Are there any strapless rides of similar size out there, What have you found over the years to be your perfect stick?

I currently ride a wide 5'7. I think the width (around 20") is hampering my transitions from side to side.

I'm 68 to 70 kg and ride the 5'10 mulcoy. Size is right for me strapless in small waves. I think riding strapless, width is easier to deal with cause you can move your feet around more.

In bigger waves I ride a 5' 9 Kontact with straps which is thinner but has less rocker. I've ridden smaller boards strapped and that can feel good in overhead waves with a powered up kite.

Your 5' 7 at 20" wide probably has more planing area than the Mulcoy as width does make a lot of difference to the area. Also the mulcoy has a lot of rocker so it's not hard to control the area

It does depend on how you ride and what you like - more area means more of a surfboard feel and less powered up from the kite.

hey salt

i ride the 6"0 mulcoy and it would be my fav board for sure I'm 78 kgs and 6'2. I have played around a fair bit with boards and sizes and i prodominatly ride on my back hand unhooked down the line and i really enjoy a wider bigger board. So i guess it maybe personal preference though from the boards i have ridden over the years i feel a lot more comfortable on bigger boards as apposed to smaller. I guess the advantage for me with smaller boards is the weight and when riding upwind makes a lot more easier to do airs and take the board with your feet.

I also personally really enjoy generating speed from the wave and linking turns together like surfing which i think is achieved a lot more with slightly bigger wider more volume boards..
thats my two cents i hope this helps.

I have just ordered a 5"7 mulcoy and another 5'10 as i have loved mine so much

5'10 should be great for your weight as an allround board. It's only 18' 1/3 wide which isn't a wide boards by any means and should easy to control. A 5'7 at around 20' wide will feel like a much bigger board than this 5'10.

the 5'10 is freakin amazing, top 2 board of all time for mine??? i am 75kgs and it holds a good line in decent sized surf.
i went the board with inserts and the deck has held up really well, loves air.
are they really doing a 5'7" Mulcoy, or was that a typo???

haha, i have already been through 2 tail pads on this board! my boards never usually out last the first tail pad.

Thanks for your insightful replies all. Been thinking about this board for a while now. I guess you have to special order the inserts... At least I didn't see them. I don't think they're making a 5 .7 its not on the site.
Sick photo surfingboy. Really nice. I have been inspired by the kite goons video, I'm sure you've seen it but if not, Google it.

Haha, why me? I have tried the Vanguard, but to be honest it's not really the same as the real Tomo board. It's still alright to muck around on, but to be honest I don't trust any firewire construction in the slightest.
Board wise I actually prefer shorter wider boards with a very full nose and drawn in tail, I think these work best for the condition I get to wave ride in most.

I've owned a 5'10" mulcoy. Like surfingboye I really rate it. Mine was the first model which was super light weight, no inserts; hence had about 6 trips to the ding doctor, Still it rode and free surfed well, even though it lacked a bit of foam to paddle when it was bigger or with large currents. I think it's one of the best advanced stock boards you can buy. It will initially ride narrow to you after being on a 20" board. I currently kit and paddle hand shaped tomos. (5'2", 5'3", and 5'4" ranging from 17"-18" wide). The firewire vanguard had construction issues for paddle surfing. The newer model has 'supposedly' addressed these issues. It has broken sales records for firewire. They are bringing out a pointy nose tomo board soon if it hasn't already been released. I was absolutely sold on both kiting and paddling my hand shaped versions..... but I'm now finding on my backhand especially when it's bigger I would prefer a narrower tail. Rowdy is spot on with his comments. I to, like a fuller nose and the template of a swallow in medium width tail. I started off with short boards... crept up longer... and now back to bare minimum height for paddling.

btw... great photo surfingboye. That's an ad right there

Firewire look strong with their techno look but break fairly easily kiting. They do have a "kite construction though" in a few models - have not tried those. I really like super light boards, they just dont like me stomping on them.....

i think the inserts were only done at the start to cater for the strapped crew, pretty sure they don't do them with inserts anymore???

Really nice air and photo Surfing Boye, looks like you have been hanging out with Leo. I am still not keen on strapless airs at that height, I don't want to say it's my age, but maybe have something to do with my age :) I might have Leo give me a clinic so I can avoid some of the pain.

Thanks for your input fellas. Sold.

I reckon i got lucky. Older board with the inserts- Means stronger deck, , couple of hundred bucks off with free fins, can't wait to get out there. I think it compliments my buffalo horns nicely.

What do you guys reccomend for footstraps. I plan to use them when its over 25kn or big surf.

Nice board man!
From my experience though you have to watch out with inserts in the board, especially unstrapped when your heel hits hard right on the edge of them, since the foam is soft and the insert pack is hard it's easy to crack the board (much like next to the stringer). If it's a tough board though you should be fine.
Personally I recommend wax and a back pad, it's all up to you though.

p.s. Is it Epoxy or Poly? and what blank is it? Styro or PU?

er. i dunno.
I think this is it:
www.stretchboards.com/boards/kiteboards/#bucketStraplessConstruction

Composite fin set (Future or FCS)
(4) 3-hole foot strap inserts for variable stance positioning
Double 6 oz. deck & bottom
1/4" paraband bass wood stringer
2.5 pcf density EPS compression molded blank from Marko foam

Do you reckon this foot pad is a good idea...i'm guessing its removable when you decide to use a front strap.

Looks good. Only thing I would be worried about is the EPS blank, the ones I've had seem to more prone to delam issues, could just be coincidence though. I haven't really heard of any of these delaming, but then again I haven't seen or known that many people that have one.

I had the 5'10 until it was stolen, and I found it fantastic. Have had about 15 kitesurf/surfboards and it was head and shoulders better, light, lively, responsive. I am 82kg and found it fine as long as kite was powered.

Will get another one asap.

$550 including Mulcoy fins (5). It does have some fading on the left side, its been sitting in the shop for a couple of years. Hope the UV hasn't damaged the integrity of the board.

Deck pad and footstraps another $50 Deal!
