Hi all,
Denys here ... just adding my 2 cents.
My first kite was the Bandit 1 that I bought from a German guy in Philippines who convinced me that it was one of the best kite on the market. I did a bit of online research to confirm it. I have since then had almost every version of the bandit and only skipped 3 or 4 versions. I tried many other kites from most brands and always came back to Bandit even for wakestyle training. The kite performance has always been excellent and is just perfect for my style (combination of freestyle, big air and wave). Disclaimer: I naturally started to get good deals and to support F-one, not just for the deals but because I really believe in this product and want to proudly support it.
Their presence in Australia is very low compared to other countries probably for marketing reasons and because a lot of people are not aware of how good these kites are. Very very few people were disappointed after trying my Bandits, even pure C shape kite riders that are used to a different type of kite.
I had many kitemares/deathloops like everyone kiting extensively for various reasons (snapped lines, tangle lines with other kites, leash pulling the bar, etc.). The only issue I ever had with the bandits that was caused by a design problem was the safety release being too sensitive with the 2011 version I think. This was very quickly identified and F-one did recall all the chicken loops for replacement. This being said, I only had to use my safety system at most 5-6 times in over 10 years but never had any issues with it. The Bandit has an outstanding depower capability making it in my opinion a very safe kite in general, I never felt unsafe using it, quite the opposite. Death loops can happen for many different reasons (design, old equipment, tangled lines, etc); kiters should be taught or do some research on how to avoid and what to do in the event of a deathloop. As Cauncy said, there is always the option to release the leash which will directly put the loops to an end; you would just need to swim/run fast :) . See this very instructive and well known video here:
F-one spends an incredible amount of time in R&D and as they have very few models compared to other brands, the bandit is probably the most advanced product on the market. They brought a lot of innovation on the kite market (i.e. the delta shape which has been adopted by most brands). However, they tend to take their time when it comes to bar improvements. I'm really glad they caught up this year and added new features improving safety and usability (swivel, adjustable bar length, new safety system, etc.). That new bar is really nice. The only thing that is still missing in my opinion is a different pulley system which tends to damage the bridles, especially with big loops :-)
In terms of support, I always had good support in every countries I have lived (Asia, Europe, Mauritius and Australia) and used the warranty on a number of other products without any problems. Sometimes, you need to be patient and wait for the shipping though which can be frustrating but probably applies to a lot of other brands.
I agree that this brand bashing is uncool and anyone with the same intention would probably be able to do the same with any major brands by just googling "Brand_name issues/accident". Just give it a try with the Trust bar for example which is known as one of the best bar on the market... All brands have had issues, no product is perfect especially in the kite industry which is still very new. Just look at how kites have improved in 15 years. What matters is that all brand keep improving and testing their products and security. And it would be very wrong to say that it is not the case for the Bandit. I would actually be very surprised to hear that another kite has had more development/testing than the Bandit. And again, schools and riders have also a very important to play when it comes to security; death loops are more common than most people would imagine and can happen for a lot of various reasons. People need to know how to react in this situation like they need to know the emergency procedure on a plane.
