Ok, at risk of receiving more information than I can digest, I have a question. First - been foiling for 12months (sporadically due to work) and have primarily been using a 9m HL. I ride a 125 Axis Carbon Free and a 600 wing on a 900 mast.

I have absolutely no desire to race and my other board is an underground Kipuna (no TT).

Second - my quiver will consist of a 6m Alpha, 10m Alpha and a ?????
I am considering a 13m Foil kite but I am concerned about it being too slow in the turns.

Not interested in hearing about other brands. Want to hear from people that know the V2 HL & V3 Chrono. TIA.

Hi Narrak,

I think you can probably write all the people with HL2 and Chrono3 experience names on a postage stamp with a 4" paintbrush. You may need to be a little less strict in your parameters to get ANY feedback.

We haven't sold any HL2 or Chrono3 in our store. The Hyperlink turns pretty reasonably for it's size but in light winds the large sizes will be sluggish. I know you don't want to hear of alternatives, but it may well be in your best interest to explore outside of Ozone if looking for specialty light wind kites.

Other than the Hyperlink, most big foil kites tend to get their power from apparent wind and high aspect designs like Chrono, Soul, Sonic 3, etc. This will mean slower turning but fantastic light wind ability when ridden with a bit of pace. Chrono is not far off race kite performance so don't expect agile, crisp performance in large sizes.

For light wind foiling, an open mind to things like the Flysurfer Peak4, BRM Clouds or dare I say the Aluula kites?

Steve from Ozone may be able to shine a bit of light on your original request as I reckon he'd be the only one with the experience you are looking for.

Ive been foilboarding and tting with 7m, 9m and 12m UL Hyperlinks for the last 2 years. Last year I demoed a 10m Alpha which I really liked.
Over the course of this season the only 2 kites I have used is 9m Amp and my 12m UL Hyperlink. The Amp which I use for powered looping tt sessions doesn't start working till 20+knts so consequently over this season the amp has been used no more the 12-15 times out of probably 80 sessions . The remainder were all with Hyperlink. With the 12m Hyperlink I can have satisfying foilboarding boosting sessions in as low as 12-14 knts an up to high teens. When it gets to consistent solid high teens the Hyperlink with a TT is superfun with high floaty boosts. For me the 12m Hyperlink is not only the ultimate session saver the figures tell me it is my main kite. Of course is flies a differently to a LEI but with a wide bar and 15m lines any perceived sluggishness can be minimised.
I think with 6m, 10m Alpha and a 13 Hyperlink you would have an awesome quiver... one I'd like myself, with the addition of a 9m Amp!

Thanks Snalberski. I have previously been happy with my 8m HL and 8/10 m Enduros. Change of disciplines has led me down this path with my primary ride being on my foil. I think the 13m V2 HL is the answer to round things out.

9m chrono V3 is one of my main and favourite kites, used often for hydrofoil (usually use it when wind is light on surffoil or with a fast hydrofoil when on flat water). I have flown a 9m hyperlink v2 back to back with the chronov3 only once, and v1 back to back a few times.

Would happily choose either as my light wind kite (9m is largest kite I want. On a side note, maybe worth keeping your 9m hyperlink as largest kite and just adding a sudffoil for when it gets light. I dont think any 13m will turn fast). Both the chrono and hyperlink handle, turn and depower extremely well in my opinion, even when flying through the middle of window (main reasons I prefer these to souls). Im used to peaks and wave kites, so cannot tolerate slow turning kites, these turn really well for closed cell foils. I found both the chrono and hyperlink to feel pretty similar at the bar.

The chrono will be faster, but i dont have numbers to compare. Theoretically the hyperlink might be more stable, with its thicker profile, but then again it is already pretty difficult to make the chrono misbehave.

So sorry i cant give you any clear differences between the two. But since you are looking at 13m I would assume you are interrested in using it in the very lightest winds. If money is no object I would personally choose the chrono v3 in ultralight fabric, since its extra speed / efficiency might be most usefull in the lightest wind. But if you are not very interrested in going fast, then you will likely have just as good a time and save money going for the hyperlink v2 (they are already ultralight cloth).

The only real downsides i see to the chrono is that it is quite a bit more expensive than the hyperlink (and then add on ultralight cloth) and without a fast hydrofoil the higher speed might not be used / necessary. Hyperlink might be a bit easier to use for first foil kite, but that doesn't apply to you.

I had a chat with Gunnar Biniasch via messenger about this as well and, given that I am just free styling, he recommended the HL over the Chrono as he said it is faster turning and easier relaunch (if dropped which I don't often do anymore). Adding the lighter weight material than the standard Chrono and the variables in cost, it makes a whole lot of sense for an old bloke that has no interest in going fast.

Hi! Just started foilboarding and also doing a lot of snowkiting during winter I was recommended to buy the Hyperlink 13m for light wind. Reason was that it could be used both as open and closed cells.
My main scope for winter is longer tourriding in the mountains with back packk, bringing only two kites (For instance HL 13m and the one I already have, Ozone Subzero 7m (i also have the 9m).
If i was a millionaire I would probably buy separate kites for various contditions on sea and snow. But I don?t need it to work perfectly. I just need a good kite for lightwind that can work well both on foilboard and snowkiting. Interesting thoughts in this thread - also that I might look on other brands than Ozone.

I fly chrono v3 ultra light 13m and 15m and absolutely love them.their light wind capabilities are rediculous and relaunch is very good..I ride free ride/race on 15m lines and definitely recommend.how ever these kites are delicate and require careful handling ie no rough launch/landings..

Hi Narrak.
Not quite sure what type of kiting you're aiming to do with your whole kite foil setup and also it would be interesting to know your weight and the wind you want to use the kite in.

As has been mentioned by other posters and by yourself, a big foil kite can be slow in turning but fast in a straight line. If it's just going in straight lines with a freeride foil then the Hyperlink or Flysurfer Soul would be an easy solution. However judging by the size of your foil you could go for a smaller kite with a bigger more surf oriented foil of approx. 1000 sq cm or more depending on your weight and local conditions.

Once you go to a surf foil a whole new world of foiling opens up with smaller more manoeuvrable kites and ability to catch and foil waves, even small wind chop. A surf foil will give you a much better bottom end foil speed meaning that you can slow down with the foil in manoeuvres without touching down and make snappy or drawn out turns at will. You can also use lightweight, inexpensive single skin foil kites like the Flysurfer Peak4 which have phenomenal drift and amplify the fun even more.

If you haven't tried a surf foil and they pique your interest, see if you can try one from another friendly foiler. I use a Moses 679 which is approx. 1000 sq cm and it has good top end speed as well as a good bottom end. You can find excellent similar foils in the Axis range but you may need the surf fuselage.
