Think carefully before plonking for new gear as a beginner. Depreciation is massive and there is a lot of decent used gear out there. As a beginner you'll probably give your gear a flogging and every one (yourself included) will feel better if your doing it to something that deserves it. You'll have to do more research if you buy second hand but there are plenty of beginner oriented combos out there. You should be able to pick up a full set of 2004/2005 gear for about $1k, then you can spend the other grand on lessons and a second kite for more or less windy conditions. Bonza!!

Depends on where you are kiting!
Average size kite for someone your weight in PERTH would be a 12m.
Go secondhand for sure (to start off with)...youre bound to put at least 1 tear in it! 2-3 years ago it could cost up to 2000 for a secondhand kit so right now its definitely a buyers market (You can probaly thank BEST for that...or hate them!)
BTW is this what youre instructor recommended?

hav to agree with the others
buying new stuff for learning with wood be a bit silly.

e.g. cood hook you up with a latest model kie second hand and could prob organise a bar n lines n second hand board for like 1400-1500.
but i dont wanna FORCE you.

theer are heeps of other gear, just check out the for sale forum, and then do a search on the products for info bout em online.
good luck, but dont be fooled.

If your still going through lessons, hold of on the purchase until your finished. I purchased new from the start, money wasn't a problem and safety and reliability were the reasons for purchasing new. I have friend's wanting to get into the sport and to some I've recommended going second-hand. One friend in particular (yeh, you ya crazy pr$ck if ya reading this) would be insane to buy new; his first kite will end up trashed in no time. I’ve been very cautious and lucky in the learning stages and had no problems.

Take into consideration the add ons to purchase on top of the basic package. As suggested in the before mentioned posts, buying second-hand at a good price could mean extra money for ie: a winter steamer, rashie, booties, glasses ect.

Its a good idea to pay for lessons and ask the dude to demo some different style of kites and their safety's then you can see what you like / and don't like b4 paying top $$

Go secondhand! You can pick up absolute bargins at the moment and a full set of kit to strat with shouldn't cost you more than about $1000. $600 buys you a season or 2 old kite, $300 for a season or 2 old board and then harness. Go up to $1400 and you should have a top quality, less than 12 month old kite, a year old board and a new harness.

I believe that definitely the cabrinah switchblade 12m (which has the power of a C-kite 14m) is the ultimate kite for learning as you can fully adjust the de-power, I had a fuel 11m C kite and found that it didn't have enough power once I'd learnt to fly the kite. As soon as I got the switchblade I was off and away. The good thing with the switchblade is the hugh de-power that u have...honestly it is not all useable but does make it very safe for a beginner... You see a standard 14m C-kite would probabaly have too much for a beginner. I am 82kgs. The 142 or 146 no real big difference.
You should have a look at ebay as you'd probably find a good deal there with board and kite! Happy kiting
