I have been flying the Nemesis HP for a few days and I am impressed.
Nemesis HP SIZE: 10mtr (demo, 1 of 5 about to be circulated around Australia)
My weight : 100kg
Board : 138 x 39.5 Ltd Pro, Union boots
Wind strength : Steady 15 knots, outgoing assisted tide.
Here is my view.
seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=5825Firstly there is a new bag, quite blinged up from what you would normally expect from Best. Real good to see that your treasured kite can now be protected in a great bag.
-When I pulled it from the bag I thought it looked very similar to a Waroo Pro. And in many ways I guess it is. It has similar paneling and the same white LE Cuben/Dacron Material. However the LE isnt all Cuben, It is only used in the main load section of the LE. This is the most crucial area that most other brands have trouble strengthening, and need to increase the diameter of the LE to accomodate the Flexing. The LE is small and when you pump it up it is rock solid. 9 psi is the rated pressure.
-The graphics look great and the kite stands out from afar.,
-The new VP2 front bridle section is where the start of the changes are.
seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=5824Peter has designed the kite to achieve a 2:1 depower system without having the use of any pulleys on the bar. Downside of this is that there is 6 pulleys on the kite, but it works well and the new Switchblades for instance have a total of 6 on the kite and 2 on the Bar. So i think its probably not that bad. Apparently the new Bar will be designed with s smaller length centre line.
- The rear bridle is directly attached to the kite similar to the 2006 Waroo and the 2007 Waroo Pro direct bridle upgrade. This helps the direct feel of the kite through the bar pressure.
- the first flight of the Nemesis HP was in a steady 15 knots and we rode in the Mackay river mouth tide going out. There was absolutely no time needed to get used to the kite as it flew very similar to the waroo pro, but it seemed to have a more tidy feel. The kite was rock solid and there was no sign of LE flex or delay in the turns. This is what make these kites different to any other I have flown for 2008. the kite is super responsive and has next to no turn delay. As soon as you pull the bar to the left, the kite instantly turns. The turning speed is quick, about the same as the Waroo 2006.
- Also like the Waroo pro the kite has that shotgun power. As soon as you dive the kite through the power, you have instant grunt. Some of the 2008 other brands I have been testing seem to have a soft progressive power that some times bores me and I feel I am looking for more. As a big rider at 100kg and attempting powered freestyle moves, I like the sensation of being instantly pulled with what I can describe as a punch of power. Very nice.
- I struggled last year with the Waroo Pro to attempt unhooked kiteloops as the kite was sensative to back stall. Also multiple unhooked moves were also tricky on the Waroo Pro. The Nemesis Hp however opened my riding up once again and after watching the footage of Shannon and the crew in Brazil smacking down huge kiteloops I thought I would give it a go and Im happy to say, I can now kiteloop when and what I want. Same with unhooked wakestyle moves. You can basically park the kite at 45. and pull off 3-4 unhooked moves, hook in, and ride away. Very nice to be able to do it again. This feature of no back stall would be th highlight of this kite for me.
- The kite jumped big, just like the Waroo pro. I would like to try the 12mtr in those conditions cause I think it would have been a lot better for my weight. Im sure the reason this kite jumps big and like the Pro last season is because of the instant turning speed. Its like the saying "pull the trigger". Your loaded up, edging hard as you can, flick your rist and bang you are reefed to incredible heights. Its like riding a traditional kite on piano wire.
-the Nemesis has the EZ pump system which internaly links all the bladders into a one pump. This is optional and is a feature ive always been a little sceptical of, because of the chance that you could have a hole in a strut bladder and the entire kite deflates. Unfortunately it happened to me on this first run. After about 45mins the kite became soft and started collapsing in the sky. I needed to land the kite and repump before I went back out. Ive addressed this problem with Peter Stiewe and he has found out that it is possible that one of the strut bladders could possibly have not been sealed to the correct frequency in the factory. He has assured me that this will not be evident in the production kites. Feeew!!
Out of all the testing of 2008 gear recently I would put the Nemesis HP as one of the top kites so far, as this is the only kite that has given me the opportunity and made me feel secure enough to throw down the big moves that I used too. I was blaming it on getting too old, but looks like I have resprung and with the help of kites like this for 2008, hopefully the bar will be lifted to a higher level of riding as more moves become achievable. Please take the opportunity to have a go at this kite. Thanks
