Can you still use decent Future fins with the new box or do you have to use the North crap that comes with it?

Wondering which Futures fins you think are decent vs. North fins?

I've bought 3 sets of Futures and so far think I prefer the North fins on the Nugget??

Need more time to tell for sure - though thats the initial impression.....

Huh ?

What's so crap about the North Fins? You tell me?

They are fibreglass, the flex seems right, foils seem pretty good, out lines ? ? Compared with the fins on North production boards years ago they are awesome!

I got the Futures Lost Seaworthy and the front fins are huge and stiff in comparison. Tried the front Futures on the Futures JC1 - small and stiff. So much preferred the North front fins than either of these Futures.

I wanted to try the rear fins with more rake so the Futures Lost Seaworthy and also and got some 4' Futures Tech Flex - haven't been able to compare, so I'll sit on the fence until we get some Northerlies. Our windy season isn't happening ATM so haven't tried theses Futures enough to really compare.

From initial impression these Futures all seemed stiffer and it's a different feeling in the turns - less 'whippy'?

IMO the fins chosen by North for the Nugget were good.

The base on Futures fins have gaps. The new North box has two grub screws on the side instead of at the front.
Will the Futures fin work or will the grub screw go through the gaps?

No **** the JC1 are stiff, they are designed for large reef breaks.

I'd love to try a Tomo vanguard kiteboard.. just no option to demo one here in SA. I guess every company lifts (gets inspired by ) designs and yes its important to acknowledge the originators of the ideas. Someone has to come up with the concepts which lead to new evolutions in equipment.

I haven't seen the vanguard kite version but have heard that a vanguard paddle surfboard is possibly too fast for kiting. The channels and step tail release water so efficiently that the board just takes off. Maybe the kiting version has a different design? Anyone have one to comment? It would be interesting to compare the rockers and concaves of the Vanguard and the North CSC or other cut off nose boards for that matter. The north, from my brief look, has a very plain single concave underneath with no steps or extra channels in the nose and quite steep (possibly concave) deck angles to the rail from the stringer line - so the rails are thinner - which I'm assuming helps with its upwind and chop eating attributes. The deck has cork inlay too under the feet to absorb some shock. From memory I think the paddle version of the vanguard has quite boxy parallel rails, complex triple entry and exit concaves at the nose and tail which would suit its application of carving up small to medium waves. Its a complex and unique design built for speed. I don't think just cutting off the nose of a board makes a direct copy as the plan shape of the vanguard is only one part of the design (reducing the swing weight making the board more snappy in the turns) Inspired by - yes of course. I have to say though I've researched the tomo vanguard for paddle surfing and it may be on my next buy list!

mate I just got a S/H Vanguard 5'4" and 6' the bigger one I hope to use as a LW option or for surfing if my paddling ever gets any better

loving the Vanguard, no its not too fast but does snappy quick turns. it feels like a surfboard but turns like a TT

only issue I have had is gybing, doesn't like foot too much forward and jumping over whitewater a bit trickier with flat nose rocker, but I am learning to have my feet further back.

not my paint job but here is my baby

Let us know how you go with the big vanguard as a light wind weapon, I had been thinking this could make for an epic light wind board and super good low end

I'm looking at getting a second surfboard to my quiver. I currently have a 2014 nugget and love it. Just started riding a strapless board so still pretty much a beginner, but what would be a good board to have for spots like Cape Town and Perth? I weight between 85-90kg.

Thanks

I too have purchased a FW Vanguard kite construction 5'2".

disclaimer: I paid full 2nd hand market value for a used 2015 Vanguard...

I don't have any issues with controlling speed, I'm far from the most experienced or skilled guy here and it is simply not an issue, the speed is there in bucket loads when I want it and is easy to drop/control when I don't - actually the only thing I struggle with is strapless water starts.
I've not ridden a North board but i have had a good look at the Whip in the shop - other than the outline it is a different board.

the Vanguard needs more wind than my light wind twin tip which is about the same size. Van has much more rocker, and quite a big concave.

Hey guys,

Happy to say, that after market future fins fit in the 2016 NKB directional "multi box" no problems.
I've been using some fins, with the above future "cutout" base and they fit fine.

cheers

Josh

what a shame North didn't have the foresight to put their brand name on these boards, after all they invented surfing
