Review from Kitesurf Magazine
Introducing
The Cabo sees Best very much arriving at the wave-specific party. Aside from signing up surf legend, Pedro Henrique, they have also been hard at work developing the Cabo to give them some indisputable surf credentials. The Cabo is a lightweight three-strut affair designed to have you booting it down the line and smashing it off the top without having to worry about that pesky thing in the air??? Tested AH
Basics
Build and Construction If you want something that is going to drift effortlessly down the line then you don???t want a big heifer of a kite. Best know this, so the Cabo has three struts, no excessive reinforcements, and they???ve developed a new double-stop canopy material, Double Core RS. Out the bag and it looks and feels pretty light ??? notably so. Once pumped the Cabo has a refined taught-ness and, as with other kites of this ilk, the middle of the leading edge generally doesn???t sit flush with the sand while you???re rigging up ??? it???s that keen to get on the water. The one-pump is standard, with inlet and outlet valves in the middle of the leading edge. Set up and tuning There???s a micro bridle on the front lines, with four attachment points and mini-stainless-steel run throughs rather than pulleys. You can go short and long on both front and back attachments. We generally had the Cabo out when it was light, so rigged it accordingly. Bar and trim We???re that on-the-ball here at Kitesurf that we pretty much got the Cabo within a nanosecond of it arriving on the country ??? the 2013 bar must have been sent second class so we had the 2012 Red Line bar which was great. Although we look forward to getting our hands on this year???s incarnation??? Safety Punch out and you???re on the front lines ready to go again, if it all goes tits up then you???ve got OSR handles to get a hold of.
Performance
Turning speed, handling and feel The first session we were out with the Cabo, I was out on a 12 and going along fine, but thought I???d give the 9m Cabo a blast nonetheless: it stormed it. The low-end really is phenomenal. The turning speed is very impressive and you???ve quickly got yourself up and going and then it just delivers oodles of power. No messing at all and as smooth an operator as anything we have seen recently. The delivery of power is smooth throughout the power range, and subtle changes in bar pressure or board speed are quickly and effectively
absorbed by the kite. Sheet out as you???re heading out through chop or holding tight as something???s breaking in front, and the power is a nice snappy ???off???. Once you???re out and ready to get stuck in though, the Cabo comes into its element. Snappy turns, without driving too far forward in the window and then a nice responsiveness as you ease off the power to get into a wave, and then: the drift??? Which is very, very impressive. The Cabo doesn???t sit quite as far back in the window as other 3-strutters, but you still get an incredibly steady drift requiring pretty much zero input from the bar end. And there is no tendency to gradually drift down either ??? even with the kite a little lower in the window. For powering back up you can ease on the power and it???s their straightaway ??? no snoozing. And for driving into turns when it???s cross on, there???s the power on and off that???s essential to keep your rhythm. You feel like Pedro Henrique. Almost. The Triangle Upwind???s fine, not record breaking but fine. Down the line and it???s an absolute beauty. Trim, depower and range The low-end, as we???ve said, is truly impressive ??? and less kite always equals more fun in the surf. The depower was also excellent although, as with these lower aspect kites, you may find yourself coming in and doing a bit of knot tweaking if the wind strength varies too much over the course of your session. The trim is definitely worth getting exactly right as, when you???re in the sweet spot the Cabo really is one of ???those??? kites that you can???t get enough of.
Icing
It???s obviously a Best kite ??? there???s some nice but quite busy colourways. Ours came in a bright orange draw string sack which seemed to be confidently announcing the arrival of the new kid on the Best block.
Verdict
It???s always fun for us when a brand introduces an entirely new kite to the range, and there???s no doubt that Best have given the Cabo their all. For a ???first edition??? it is a highly refined and honed offering. I tried to find something that I didn???t like about it but I really couldn???t. It works with you, drifts like it???s the most natural thing on the planet, and you can probably go out on a size smaller than everyone else on the water. 10 out of 10.
