I usually ride a SUP up here in Darwin and after years of watching the kite crew absolutely shredding, I finally pulled the pin and bought a Duotone Lizard 2.5 trainer kite from the local shop.
Straight down the beach after work last night and flew for about an hour in around 9 knots with gusts up to 12, which gave me a good feel for power - it was so sick! Just standing on the beach with a trainer.
I was grinning and hooting like a grom all over again !!!
After around 30 - 40 minutes I was comfortable doing turns and infinity sign left and right. Fully checked out the wind window, practised stalling, and of course, heaps of launching

.
Which is cool - I wanna learn how to fly properly. No short cuts. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing properly.
In that first session, the lessons I feel I've already learnt are so valuable. I can fully see why trainer kites are so important. I've spent decades on the water surfing and SUP in all sorts of conditions - but that's not flying a kite.
The whole session was so sick and has me absolutely SO FROTHY for wind now - and that's just my first hour on the beach with the Lizard!

My takeaway is absolutely get a trainer, the lessons learnt are invaluable and will only make you more competent (and less of a risk) when you do get on the water.
Anyway - I know what I'll be doin' this arvo after work - yeeew!!!
