I'm looking to get a directional for those low wind days.

Question is what size should I be looking at? I've got an option on a 6.0 and 6.4, strapless so I reckon they can be surfed on windless days?

I'm on a Core GTS 6/9 and adding a 12 now.

Thanks!

A "directional"? I assume you mean a surfboard.

What makes a good light wind surfboard....

- width
-low rocker
- double concave
Eg. Nth nugget

So stating the length of those boards doesn't tell us much.

Just a simple 5'8 to 7' thruster should do the job. Geesh

^ Incorrect!

Outline, volume and bottom contours have much larger impact on a board performance than length.

A 5'8 grom stick is not going to be a good light wind option. Neither is a 7' indo gun.

WT? Those boards (kite surfing ones without foot straps), are just plain grommet surf boards! I've even surfed one after a session of kiting at Cosey Corner in Torquay and a quick surf (real surfing) session around the other side. They perform exactly the same way. Can someone show me the difference visually?

Sorry Lofty you've lost me. What is the query?

OP is looking for a light wind board. I am suggesting a fish shape, wide, low rocker, double concave and prefer quad fins with a wide tail. Nth nugget is an example. Length doesn't matter as much. The nugget comes as 5'5 or 5'2. I am riding a similar shape in 5'4. Due to the width these boards have lots of volume. The nugget could easily be paddled by an average sized male.

A kite surfboard is one that costs 1000 and a surfboard costs 700, you need to pay extra for the inserts you dont use and the stiffness that bounces you off!

"inserts"? What inserts? Stiffness? Compare me a Cabrinha surfboard with a Strapper or a Trigger Brothers. It's almost 100% the same.

5'8"s are great, go 19-20' wide and try get 2 1/2" min thicknes and a fish or a double ender shape with low rocker. blasting in 10 kts on the 12m

Will be doing some testing on a couple of directional boards hopefully this week to see how it goes. The plan is (for those that know the SA kite scene) to kite from cape town, around Robben Island and back to shore, which is why I'd like to use a directional for that purpose.

If that's your intention, I'd suggest you try a couple of freerace boards like the North Freerace or the Airush Sector

I too would like advice on this subject.

Have been kiting or 3 seasons now and am fairly competent at the basics, starting, sliding turns and started jumping.

Still trying to get a handle on toe side riding and turns.

Went up to Coronation Beach over Christmas and had a shot at wave sailing.

Don't really know much about the make up of surfboards i.e. railing, thrusters etc.

Would like to have a directional board to do some down winders and do some wave riding.

I am 178mm tall and weigh 80kgs. I have a 10m and 7m North Evo 2014.

Is there a correct size directional board for me and what material should the board be made from?

Any other advice would be appreciated.

cheers!

+ 1 for the Airush Sector or any cheap solid race board or slalom board. You'll probably appreciate the extra buoyancy when the big fish come for a look That looks a pretty serious offshore run, would definitely be looking for someone to go with for 20 + kms offshore each way and take some safety gear

Another option would be an Axis Twin Wave. I ride one. Good in the surf and fun carving around the bays.

Quote: "The 2014 Twin Wave has tucked surfboard-style rails in the center tapering to normal twin tip rails in the back. It is a symmetrical board but is supplied with one 80mm and two 70mm surf style fins and two 50mm fins for the nose. It is normally setup as a directional. It carves like no other twin tip and drives all the way through the turn. "
