Looks like the spot is sheltered in close to the shore, there looks to be 10-15 knots out the back and suspect there is plenty of wind up high where the riders have their kites.
Also not really possible to kite in such low winds with small boards like the riders seem to be using. Are the riders young people/really light weights?
Sub 10 knots is super marginal conditions most of the time due to the fickle nature of sub 10 knot winds.

well there's proof for you steve, i was standing about 150 meters out in the water, looks like you can rip in 10 knots to me. certainly wasnt anywhere near 15 knots otherwise i would have been out there insted of taking photos.
ill put a 30 knot vid up when the wind comes in.

offshore breeze, you can see the wind starting to hit the water out past the kiter's head in the hard edging photo. Wind is blowing over the land down onto the water. Doesn't mean squat. Good on you steve for calling a spade a spade.

username, that would be a south westerly, cross onshore.

look at the direction of kiters in frame 2 and 3, doesnt look offshore to me.

I was out today watching everyone hold ground on 12m and 10m kites before the lone genetrix 14m was able to hold ground. I think they are like any kite they have limitations and a wind range- from what I have seen not what is stated. the 14m with a 110 kg rider was holding ground by the time the wind reached a solid 18 knots, around the same time as me on my 12m....

is he holding ground already? not bad for a newby

I heard some one can even ride under 10 knots without the kite!

A simple flip about with PS and voila, now it looks like he is kiting in the same wind as the other pics, - cross offshore, at a spot where the shoreline is sheltered.

These pics are not fooling anyone, we all know how low we can go, and super glassy water, always raises suspicions when someone is making a claim about superior low wind performance from any kite, especially when the board is not massive, and the water is glass smooth with windy conditions visible in the background!

How much wind was this inspector steve , looks off shore or sheltered it may need the switch just to make you feel better.

On the 14m is a kid around 16 60kg other is his brother 13 45-50 kg.

seein how grunty my 12m is i can probably top that 10 knot shinnaningans.

I'm always skeptical when anyone claims planing on small boards under 15knots.

My issue with these photos is where is the wake and whitewater from the kiter's passage further back? Unless they've just jumped to those spots there's only 5mts of water disturbance behind them. Good PhotoShop perhaps?

S.A on the tides does this in the shallows............. looks like your cutting a nice edge dispite glassy surface 5knts 7knts 10knts to 15knt .

hmm an inconclusive set of pics at best, but I doubt they have been "photoshopped"

In that first shot it looks cross off, but in the second two it looks cross on. If you look at where the sun is in the pics the last one was taken facing a different direction as the first two. Also there is land visible in the background of the first shot but not the others. Assuming these were afternoon pic then they were taken looking NW, WSW and S respectively.

In the last shot there are two people standing in the water behind the kiter, so it's pretty shallow there making walking back upwind if/when you are not holding ground (or to relaunch!) an option.

Steve is right that last shot does seem to have a lot of wind out the back.

Regardless - that spot looks epic on google earth - in the right tide and wind it's flatty goodness as far as you want / need it...

PS - yes I am bored - Sydney has the worst (aka no) wind at the moment...

He's actually wake boarding with a piano wire tied to his harness. The bar has lines which have been dipped in hot wax to give the effect of vertical taughtness..... Also thats Jesus and his diciple in the background. I cant believe the trouble some people go to just to look cool!

8 to 12 knots is slightly different to sub 10. Sub 10 indicates the wind isn't going over 10 knots. I can ride a 14m kite with my 133 in 12 knots and stay upwind. In fact, I can ride a 13m ultraflat in 12 knots and do jumps, 15 knots on the 15m ultraflat and I almost feel overpowered.

Also, as someone else mentioned, wind on the ground and wind in the air is pretty different. I had a run at Altona a week or two back and the wind on the ground felt like nothing. I watching another guy riding back and forth on his 14 north and I figured he was just a light weight but when I put the kite in the air I suddenly realised there were 14-16 knots up there and I could ride comfortable and have fun.

Mate as a 14yo I could waterski on one ski behind a tinny with a 30hp on it. but if someone posted a photo me skiing behind it on a forum and said it was an awesome ski boat and that's all you needed to waterski behind i'm sure others would put up posts telling him he was full of ****.
