i have a 12 and 8 in the reo v3 i weigh 100kg an can get out on my 8 from about 15 knots to about 28 i want to get a something smaller i don't know whether to get a 5 or 6 for those super windy days thoughts would be much appreciated.

I reckon a 6m would be better than a five. I have a 6m 2014 reo which is still good at 30 knots (windsurfers on 3.4-4.0m sails), and I weigh about 73kg. Quite honestly, I am surprised the 8m gets you going at 15 knots. I bought a 2014 10m reo for that wind strength (about 13-17 knots, then I switch to 7m). Also, I find 5m kites are generally too fast and squirly, and are more suitable for lighter individuals (and less strong winds) for whom line tension is less.

Wowza. I have a 6m REO and hardly get to use the thing in NSW.
You must have a floaty board... Are you kiting on a SUP?

Go the 6. I have 6, 9, 12m. I would have thought a 7 at your weight, but too close to your 8. The six is my favourite kite. I use it heaps. (I'm 75kg) It has surprising range, when you use them efficiently with a surfboard. I've been out when the wind has dropped out on those up and down days, and still can get upwind and ride waves. When it does blow, the speed and pull of a smaller kite is more matched to fast down the line surfing. I'm using it 20kn + at my weight. (Hanging on from high 30's ) . The range you have quoted for your 8m is roughly what I use my 9m in. I'm guessing your local weather station isn't giving accurate on water readings.

Really? 100kilos and out on an 8 at 15 knots. That doesn't seem right. Unless you are on a foil and pretty good with it.

15 knots isn't that light! 15 knots and we'll always have some dude with a 9m at our local.

I'm 68kg and I'm using v1 8m Reo in 15-22. Guess the new v3 are super grunty

I see Pearl regularly on his 6, last week he was on the 6 and I was on my 8, he is slightly lighter than me and definitely a bit more efficient (and better on the wave!), rides unstrapped only, me with straps only. Unstrapped definitely allows you to shift weight forward and always ride out heelside to get upwind easier/better.

I've got 2015 7m Reo and 8/9/10/12 V3 2016 (all essentially the same model kites) My range starting from the 12M using a 5'2" Firewire vanguard is from 13-15 through to about 20. The 10 I'd use if the wind was 15-17 through to low 20's, and 9M from 17/18 through to 25-27, 8M from 18-20 through to high 20's, and the 7M from 22-24 through to low 30's, and I weigh 77/78kg dry, and my other strapped board is a 5'7" Axis Rakau or Delta Vamp both about 22.5ltrs, both strapped.

I think the wind must be stronger that you are estimating if you are 100kg even if you use a much bigger board for lighter days.

I reckon it flies in way less wind than 15 knots. I'm 90 kg and don't ride a twin tip either - reckon I can stay upwind easily (by working the kite) in 12 knots. Been observing the wind for over 40 years - so pretty good at estimating wind strengths too ...

i have been riding a 5'10 vanguard 19 . 2 1/2 thick no straps. its a sick board definitely the light wind machine. i can get out on my 12m from 11knots on a good solid

yeah I hear you, It probably is physical possible for me to fly the kite in relatively calm flat water at a consistent 12knots and maybe go a few metres up wind BUT in real world situations where I'm at the beach with swell, the wind lulling 2 or 3 knots and me actually wanting to head up wind at least 100m to break even after a wave ride PLUS having to work the kite like a absolute dog I'm sorry I don't see it happening... OR maybe I'm just $h!t LOL (not even joking)

My problem with making these statements however is the poor bastard who reads them and takes them out of context and purchases a 12m reo thinking he can do exactly what you are saying but in the real world (aka my example) AND be able to have fun? I think u are setting people up for misery.

Yeh I hear what you are saying too...

If the wind is lulling below 12 knots and you are trying to get back upwind - you won't be - especially if there is any sweep in the wave zone.

A steady 12 knots of wind and a floaty board with a fairly flat rocker line (I use a North Nugget in the light stuff) and you should be flying upwind!

i was really surprised too but it is possible an i have a **** load off fun in the surf. the reo's are such awesome kite i did'nt expect the bottom end they have because a heard they never used to have any? but heard they are the best wave kite on the market. everyone who rides surf board should give them a crack.

In the big picture we kite different wind,conditions ,brds etc But after all that bla bla they are sick kites love my 6 ,8,10,12m v3 Reos

My 12m Loves 15kts, but in cross off might be too much kite, i like a tad onshore 15kts perfect

Now my 6m which is 2012 so maybe 5.5m is good till 55kts, i mod my bars cause my arms are long so i have little bit more oversheet and as far as my arm goes i make the y.
This gives me several more inches depower than standard and no pulleys and cleats to play with.

Luke you need a 6 mate , the 5 is for people that don't eat enough of bens kfc. The 6 is the best kite I've ever flown and such a pleasure to use, you can see most Reo owners are saying the same , you won't look back after buying the 6.
I'm praying I can use mine in Nsw when I get my new board ( same as yours ).
