first rescue gets a best float, or best floatees, one of the 2.

make sure there are events where even the newer people can get involved. kiter-x, downwinders, etc. get some pro riders in to show us how its done. demos of this years kites, etc.

Okay the best no wind contests I have been to have had the following:
Music - DJ
Skate ramp
Wake Winch with rail pool (ARSA Mackay sickest ever no wind contest had over 100 people hanging out all day at the contest site happy as)
Promo girls and guys (can get clothing/shop sponsor to do fashion show & or bikini/board short contest)
Offer industry sponsors a trade show area. They come set up tents display & pimp product, team riders. Put them all together in a group so that people can come and talk to them about kitsurfing and products. Works best if they can come along at no charge if they can not sell. If they can sell a small fee. this way you will get more companies showing up, remember they still have to get to the contest and are often paying for riders to attend as well.
Drinks & food tent - Shade and keeps everyone on site.
Rider Tent - Shade, store gear & keeps riders on site
Have a beach party like at Lennox Heads. That was so much fun and really well organised.
I have a few photos of some of these contest I'll post them when I dig them out.

I like Sky Hooks Idea, you definitely need to include the beginners

A decent PA system
Some shade and amenities to encourage spectators
Food stall and H20
Parking
Marquee
Podium, champs, trophy etc.

Was down at the big air comp in WA last weekend and had a few thoughts while pondering how I was ever going to be a good as some of the entrants. Anyway there was no music at all which was disappointing... should be mandatory, but apart from that a bit of commentary would have been nice. Having an experience kiter siting on the beach with a mic spiting out trick names and rider names would be all it takes.

Also apart from this I was thinking it would be good if there was three groups of participants - Beginner, Inter and Expert. This way you'd get the beginners coming along giving it a crack as well. The Experts could have a laugh and remember the days when they were that bad, and after they could give the beginners tips and hints to help them move into a higher level the next year.

When I look at going to a contest I consider the following:
Chances of it being windy at the location
What type of contest it is ie: Freestyle, Wave, Slider, Boarder X etc
What media exposure it will have for the riders (so I pitch it to my sponsors)
How much it will cost to attend. Airfares, accomm, entry fee, car hire or petrol money.
How long the contest is for.
How will it be judged.
Will my sponsors contribute is normally the final decider. The most important aspect for my sponsors is the media exposure. Print media, video and TV

You said the most important thing to consider is how much media exposure your sponsor will receive,the best way to get that is to win it or at least top 4 ,got to be in it to do that though.
Even if a contest has great media coverage your sponsor wont get a second of that attention if you dont or cant perform when kiting ,unless you have other ways of attracting attention to yourself and generally your sponsor wouldnt appreciate that sort of exposure
