Hay Jamhudson2,
Take lessons first. your school or instructor will be the person best able to help you into the gear which will suit you best.
People are getting pretty sick of noobs showing up at beaches trying to learn kiteboarding at their favourite spot without the aid of a professional instructor.
Many beaches are under threat of closure to kiting due mainly to the irresponsible few who refuse to do the right thing.

You can probably expect a pretty hostile response from local kiters if you show up and start kooking out and crashing your kite amongst the locals and public.
Definately get lessons!
Good winds,
