Have you even read the PDS? I'm not sure i'd rely on it too heavily. For a start you need to have suitable safety measures in place and i'm guessing this is a pretty easy way for them to deny a claim.

I'm all for insurance, hell i could even be one of those stories on a insurance website but i'm not sure i'd rely on the KA insurance too much.

I've been with KA for years. I think the insurance would be worthwhile for a third party injury but not so much if you hurt yourself

I'm not against it, i'm just against paying for a product or service where you just end up lining someone elses pocket.

Look, i might be wrong and it might be a great policy however my take on the PDS is that it would be very easy to deny a claim. Take it from me, when **** hits the fan you need to know your policy is rock solid. Perhaps KA can advise how many members have made claims and how many have been denied?

I'm lucky and haven't had to make a claim. KA sent out an email on Friday with an example where the kiter was injured and had to take time off work but was compensated. They are aware that they need to make people better aware of examples where insurance has paid out.

I have had it for years as well. I had to make a claim about 4 years ago on a kite injury that left me out of the water for 3 months. KA paid with no issues what so ever. I think it's good value for what it covers.

The income protection is a joke, it won't cover your mortgage. But I still think it's worth having

Some superannuation funds have built in income protection that most people are unaware of, as far as public liability insurance you've got probably got a 50/50 chance of cover depending on how negligent you were.

E.g. AustralianSuper income protection insurance pays a portion of your regular wage while you are unable to work because of an illness, injury or accident. ... Nominate your cover amount: You can apply for income protection cover amount of up $20,000 (40 units) or 85% of your average salary (whichever is lower).

In Australia we have apprx 1500 members who are covered under the KA insurance policy, as already pointed out from the conversation above, every year there are claims against the policy in varying forms. All cases where there is a legitimate claim, the policy pays out to what is expected. It's in the insurance providers best interest to be honest and have integrity to claims from members otherwise we will look for a new insurer. V-insurance is our current broker and we have found them to be very helpful with insurance related matters, they deal with a number of other sporting bodies and have a very good reputation within the industry.

As always if our members are having challenges dealing with the insurance aspect of their membership, talk to KA and we will look to sort these out.

I'm a KBA member and I had a serious accident 27-SEP-18, while self launching a kite on the beach. I dislocated my LH Collar bone (Type 3), which is a complete rupture of the AC joint. Had surgery 12-OCT-18 with two SS plates and a carbon fibre strand.
I'm so very glad I am a KBA member and filed a claim with KBA's insurance company. I had to go through a few hoops to prove it was a genuine kite boarding accident, like an incident report to KBA, Surgeon/ doctor had to complete part of the claim form, addition of witness details and supply the hospital paperwork.
A couple of days after I submitted the paperwork, ATC insurance phoned me for a verbal description of the accident, told me they had contacted KBA to check the incident report was received and where about to contact the witness. Witness says they didn't see the actual accident happen, just me on the beach still attached to the kite.
Since the claim approval, I've been refunded the gap payments for anything which hasn't got a Medicare component, i.e. private hospital access ($500), post surgery sling & ice pack ($50) and all my physio gap payments ($200 approx.). For the physio I did have to submit the surgeons referral for the gap payments.
Since the claim was approved, ATC Insurance has been contacting me every month to see how I'm going in recovery and re-assuring me their here to help. They have asked me to notify them when I'm finished treatment so they can close off the file.
The insurance cover available to me is up to $2500 in injury claims, 12 months claim period from the date of the accident. They also said there was loss of income available if I needed it, I think it's 5 x $500 = $2500 (max). (I didn't need to claim this).
As I presented myself to casualty, surgeons and MRI fees where covered 100% by Medicare. Some of my out of pocket gaps on a couple of doctors appointments, aesthesis's and surgery X-rays fees, couldn't be claimed. Insurance company legally couldn't pay these gaps.

Therefore, is KBA insurance worth it? YES, definitely. I did have to prove it was a genuine claim, cross the T's and dot the i's, but the insurance company has been very good, given me peace of mind about the expenses and then I could concentrate on my recovery.

For $137 a year KBA membership, I'm stoked.

P.S, after 4 months I've heel/recovered very well, surgeon very happy, physio impressed and I'm back kite boarding again, (gently gently).

I work as an insurance broker/adviser. I would say the insurance with KA is better than have nothing but anyone with financial commitment such as a mortgage or car payments should really have proper INCOME Protection.
An average guy aged 30 has 35 years of income generating work ahead of him and if he averages 100,000 per year then his earning potential is 3.5 mil not taking in indexation /cpi
Income Protection will pay 75% of that if you can't go to work PLUS it's a FULL TAX DEDUCTION

In Australia we have a massive UNDER insurance issue with only around 30% having Income Insurance.

If you have a mortgage the banks are ruthless when it comes to nonpayment - they love it when someone defaults and they can reposes the house and sell it.
