Today was pretty average conditions. There was a few pole dancers mowing backwards and forwards. I decided it was my duty to burn them off going faster and more upwind than them.....

Then after I had out sped and upwinded them I laid down a sweet jump to rub salt into their 2 dimensional mowing wounds.

We have very strict unspoken rules at our local beach.

Windsurfers have their area, kitesurfers have our own area.

God forbid the man who crosses the imaginary line....well what happens is the windsurfers just charge straight at you if you do. HAHA.

^^^^ really? I visit the windsurfers at Green Point, Ricketts and Point Ormond all the time. It's fun and they're generally decent people. They're nice and slow and all fall off when they try to gybe. Some years ago some tosser did a jump and sprayed me but generally they're ok. The crew at Ricketts are generally better when the wind is honking.

The wind shadow in a northerly at Green Point is particularly entertaining. The sailboards wobble and fall but the kite flies above it. Getting too close in at Elwood can be a bit fraught. The turbulence knocks the kite around a bit.

Windsurfers could probably keep up with speed and angle if they tried. Most don't. In my windsurfing days I would do coast runs and stop in at each beach to see what was happening. I still do that on kite gear. Even most kiteboarders don't use the upwind potential of their gear.

When windsurfers are rocking in a strong breeze (and once myself) it is pretty awesome and take strength and skill, kites are comparatively easy to ride.

I love the video of Robbie and Polokow wave riding together at a big right point and pushing the limits, not sure what that was called.

we don't have this problem on the northern beaches in Sydney , lucky to get more than 3 or 4 wind surfers around here .

My point is there is no dividing line and we can, and do, ride wherever we want to. I got charged, once (maybe gybed in front of once too). In general they can't keep up so they can only charge me if I let them.

Yep, that's what I like about the kite, upwind, air and freedom. almost feel like a tosser when you cut the windsurfers up but they have a choice too!!

i just quitly go upwind of them a fair distance and drop my kite allllll the way down to just above the water and follow them useing the kite to block ALL there wind. then they randomly out of nowhere the wind stops so they fall back onto themselves into the water and go WTF today strangest thing happened!! the wind just stopped all of a sudden out of nowhere hahahahaha use to only do this to friends but im finding it hard not to to the general public aswell... they never once figure it out untill i told them

On my wave gear I am equal speed with wave kiters, change to a FSW board (still not a fast board) and passing them regularly enough that it becomes an issue with line width and reefs ensuring one has to sail certain direction.

Just push them into extinction!

Man it hurts to say that for once I agree with Mark... When just about any sailboard is fully powered there are very few twin tip and surf board riders that would get close to their speed with a kite... just to repeat, when fully powered... Flame away gang...

The last old die hard local poledancer here has been kiteing now for months, after being a "sailor" his whole life now says he would never be restricted by a boat and sail ever again. He cant believe how much more unrestricted and maneuverable kiteing is to him.
Has given him a new buzz in life like he is a teenager again. His enthusiasm is awesome to see.

yes a few local poleys in my area are finally getting the bug, one by one, it has taken them a few years, main reason they say to me is they are scared of the kite so only go out in lighter winds .... and then are genuinely surprised that all the gear fits in the boot of their car!?

I don't know at what point you kiters have deluded yourselves into the belief that you're quicker crosswind, better at getting upwind. Depending what kit the windsurfers on the best you're gonna do on a twin tip is match their speed/upwind angle.

Like Mark said, you must be sailing at beginner windsurfing spots, or where there's little interaction.

Whatever let's you sleep at night I guess.

If you're gonna brag, stick to what you can definitely brag about, getting air.

I have never seen an instance when a pole dancer goes upwind better than me. Not once. Not ever.

Jump the dinosaur is even more fun but only do it if you know them. Looking down on one is priceless.

I don't know any of them..,,, I've never jumped directly over one before (though I have been tempted...) I have jumped near by and looked down at the at the dinosaur far below!..

Actually I didn't even consider poleys would be on the kite page. What are they doing here? They must come to be trolled?
I never go to the pole page. If I do by accident I scream and exit out asafp.

AGREED I don't windsurf but its certainly harder technically than kiting and looks way better at Jaws/Big Margs etc than little guys holding kites. Seems there is some trolling going on

New Years eave at corros, I'd say kiters were outnumbered 4-1
On the flat generally poleys get the nod on a par skill wise, it's when there's good swell their progressions halted heading out, upwind IMHO is where kiters have the upper hand

Agreed, their upwind ability is not very efficient, thats why the have to head out to the horizon to get to back to the take off spot taking a lot of time, while the kiters have cut straight up wind back to the start of the wave, caught 3 more, by the time they return from whale watching.lol
Thats why if they are on a swell, even if I have right of way, I'll pull off it and let the poor bugger have it, otherwise he is up for another long journey out without even getting a wave. No polers left here now though.

And yeah, in a big good swell they can go ok, as long as there is a deep channel so they can actually get out, otherwise they struggle big time getting smashed trying to get past the breakers and getting washed back in...... fun to watch though.
I think thats the main reason all the polers that have been dancing for 20 years at our local, now all kite.

I'm actually considering getting into windsurfing (on a SUP). What size sail should I get for my 9'6 - I want to use it in smallish surf in light winds - eg 10 - 15 knots.

The idea is I can SUP surf when there is not too much wind, or it's offshore, I can windSUP when it's light winds, and I can kite when its more than 18 knots.

Can any windsurfers reading this thread give me some advice on what size/ style sail I'd be after?

I'll respect them until a kiter takes the gps speed record at our flat water spot. When those dinosaurs turn off the wind and do a speed run i cannot keep up. I reckon I'm topping out around 27knotts but those guys are hitting 40. The record is 44!

Ive been chasing a speedboard for nearly 2 years now to put the issue to rest. If you can smoke one, off the wind plums I'm all ears.... Maybe you have a special speed mutant to take care of business?

A speed mutant.... now that's a good idea!... No. I have no such location locally for offwind flatwater speed runs.

The closest I get to that scenario is when I step off the water and onto the land into my kitebuggy. The kitebuggy smokes the hell out of the land equivalent of a windsurfer a blocart.
