HI all,

We're planning a WA coast family road trip for three weeks kicking off in mid Feb 2019. We'll be driving a Prado and towing an old school road only caravan leaving from Mandurah. We are local to WA, both kite and SUP and are looking for some serious downtime to relax but still get a kite and a surf in. Some touristy stuff is also on the cards. It'll be tag team water time for us with the little bloke but the ability to park on the beach with the 4WD makes this pretty easy. Its what we do now. Hard bit is we are still undecided whether to go North or South.

North would mean Exmouth in a couple of days then cruise back down the coast: Coral bay, Shark bay, , Kalbarrie, Coros or Horrocks, Port Denison , Jurien etc.

South would mean Esperence (Cape le Grande) then cruise back home again along the south coast, Hopetoun, Bremer Bay, Albany, Walpole, Hamelin Bay etc.

Just gonna chuck it out there. If you had this option at that time of year, which way would you go, and why?

South with out a doubt. Pretty feral up north in Feb. heat, no swell, flies and cyclones.

^^^^^ Wot he says. Done a few road trips down there. All I would add is the ya might wanna put an extra 120 on it to get down as far as Cape Arid.

That's the next one on my list . Cape Le Grand and the National park camping ground at Lucky bay is fabulous tho .

Any idea what wind is like on the South Coast that time of year? I've had a look at seasonal wind roses and it looks a mixed bag of pot luck...

I've done Cap Arid a few times, Poison Creek to be specific. Beach fishing in winter out there is legendary. Lots of hidden gem waves along that coast too if you go looking. Been as far along as point Culver but we're talking seriously remote there and out of our league for this trip.
All my time down there was pre-kiting days and over 15 years ago and for the life of me I don't recall wind directions.
Anyone able to give the heads up on prevailing directions that time of year, Esperence to Augusta?

Wind is always a mixed bag down there. Best for kite is a east pattern surf needs more of a north pattern. Over 2 weeks you should get both. Esperance is an awesome place to surf, kite or fish. What's great is you can pretty well always get an offshore with all the bays which is unique in WA. No guarantees of offshore surf but good for fishing or beach with the fam. Watch out for men in grey suits. Enjoy.

South!! Cranking south Easter's that time of year and not 40+ with flys

Exmouth in February, no way. I've naively done it before. I still tell the story. Never again.

On the other hand, I personally have never had luck with wind going south past Margaret River. It might just be my luck.

Just for a holiday (no kiting) south 100%. I understand there is Kiting good wind south too so try your luck.

I would go to Lano, Gero and everything in between to kite but unsure how fun that is for the family sight seeing....

Finally found some more detailed weather info too. S - SE predominant for Feb/March. Looking forward to those ultra white sand beaches and aqua water.

Yep definitely South at that time of the year.
North will start to trough out by then whereas South you should get some cranking Easterlies (cross-shore).

ill gladly post a few pics of me kiting whilst your sat on a white sandy beach, slurping a poor coffee and stale bacon butty that's been living in a corner of a pie warmer waiting for you to arrive
