Yeah, I know, first world problems....

I have a padlock for my old car which I put my key in and has a combination lock. That was great on my old car but the new car has keyless entry and putting it in the padlock is pretty pointless because the moment you touch the car handles, it senses the key is nearby and opens the car. The emergency key doesn't start the car, its for opening the door and the glove compartment but not the ignition.

I know the whole option of having the key with me is one option to consider, but I've previously sprung a leak and lost a mobile phone that way.

Any ideas?

I use a key safe (can't remember which version) with mine and provided I lock somewhere greater the 50cm from the handle it's all good, I guess systems may be different but the Nissan system requires the key to be within 400mm to work so anywhere under the wheel arches, or front bumper means the car can't be unlocked.

i have an aqua pouch which is tied by three different points to my pocket on my ion shorts saffer and never had any issues .

Can you dead lock the car? Some cars have an option when you lock it by pressing the lock button twice.

rope with normal key around your neck (i use a shoelace)

Bury it.

Go to locksmith and get an unchipped copy cut.
Failing that hide under nearby log, stick, grass or leaf.

Don't recall the name but I use the key locker that fits into your tow mount. Fairly discreet and secure but I guess the thieves have learnt about this sh!t by now.

Shelving?

I have had the same issue in the past. Trick I learned from the car dealer was to wrap the key ink kitchen foil - it can no longer be detected - problem solved.

I have the same issue with a nissan extrail. spent about an hr trying to work out here to hang the key so it does not sense it.

Found the hanging the key under the front of the car is the only place it works. Bloody thing had me beat for a while.

So he cuts it off and what then? He now has a metal box with a key to take home with no valuables. He has to break into it on the spot. My guess is it's easier and less conspicuous to break a window or try find the person who his their key.

My genius mechanic changed the combination on my surflock while my key was still in it so I called up the inventor who luckily lived around the corner and with an angle grinder it took him about three minutes to get into it.
Pretty sure it's easier for the pimply 15yo to smash a window and run.

wtf, he would then have your key in little box made of cheap 1mm chinese mild steel.
he will then do whatever he can to get into it... a hammer, screwdriver and a gutter is then all he needs.

why **** around with one of these stupid things when you could get a spare cut?

You obviously don't own a modern car. You can't lock the key in some modern vehicles as they sense the key and open the doors.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I had mine on the rear tow bar which is obviously close to the rear door which is probably a sensor point. I'll try the front of the car.

Also heard from other people about the tin foil and key options. Apparently if you lock the car with the emergency key it doesn't enable the keyless entry so that could be a good suggestion as well.

At Horrocks it pretty important to leave the key in the ignition and doors unlocked, so when I screw up and finish up down at stinky point some kind old duffer, or mate, will drive down to pick me up and save a long walk.... Gotta love horrocks!

Don't bother getting a key cut without a chip, every time you use it it will open the door but set off the alarm and you will look like an idiot.

HAAK from SA is a bit of an expert breaking into these and resetting the combination, he can do it in seconds, umm minutes, um hours, ok it took him a few days and a drill . Thanks for the new one HAAK

Use your emergency key to lock your normal key in the car then either carry your emergency key on you (in the key holder in your wettie, boardies, harness, necklace what ever)

The challenge with that logic (or so I thought) is that if the key is inside the car, it would be close enough to set off the sensors so anyone could walk up and open the door and it would open based on the proximity of the key.

In reality, I believe that locking the door with the emergency disables the keyless entry but I need to verify it.

Take the emergency key out, put the remote in the car, lock the door with the key and then lock the key in a surf lock.

Our car is keyless to open and start with a push button. If I leave the key anywhere near the car it can be opened simply by pressing the door button. A real dilemma at the beach. And you can't lock it if the key is inside, it just beeps at you.

My car is not expensive and i've taken the electric key in the water every time I go for about 5 years. Still hasn't failed.
You would hope if you bought an expensive car it would be even better.

Alright, so I tested removing the emergency key and it doesn't make a difference, the car door still opens. If I lock the door with the emergency key, only the driver door locks and if I try to lock all the doors prior to closing, they reopen when I close the door. Car is too damn smart for it's own good.

I haven't tested the foil option but a couple of people have said it works so I may try that.

I did check with the key at the front bumper and it seems like this is the best solution because the car door doesn't open there, but unfortunately I don't have anything to attach it to there which is an issue (I didn't have a good look and I may try something like the suspension to see if that helps, or maybe even putting it on one of the back doors where it is away from the front doors and the boot. I have been hanging off on my front recovery hooks as I was weighing up whether to put on a front bar that has front recovery hooks built in so I may have to consider the back door or foil option until then.

i tried this tonight and it worked . Hyundai santa fe 2010 highlander. took emergency key out , left main key in the car . locked doors with emergency key and could not open the doors via the buttons on the handles . So win now i just take the emergency key in my aqua pouch
