Hi,

Can anyone offer recs on best trainer kite to buy? Does the size matter?

I'm inland (kalgoorlie), what sort of min knots do trainers require? (average afternoon breezes here about 10ish most avros), will that be enough to fly a trainer?

i recently bought a HQ rush 350 pro. 3.5 meter foil, for longboarding in carparks. it came with a bar, (not handles) and has a fair bit of pull in 15 knots. comes with a 3rd line safety that runs from the back of the kite through the middle of the bar, and attatches to your wrist. im happy with it. its wind range is about 4 knots to 21 knots. look it up on e-bay. you can get smaller ones, and they all fly in bugger all wind.

Hi Paula

One of the best trainer kites is the Ozone ImpIII, you can find all the details here, there are thousands of them in use around Australia. 10 knots is plenty to fly a trainer, you would be best with either the 2.5M or the 3.5M, but go for the 2.5 if you intend to fly it when yyou are at the coast, becasue it will be windier there and the 3.5 will likely be too big.

If you end up buying a foil, Ozone are brilliant, make sure you get some bum padding particularly if you are going to use a mountain board. I imagine it is fairly short on grass in Kalgoorlie and gusty. I bruised my coccyx quite badly a couple of times but you will have a ball!

If you can go upwind on a mountain board the transition to water will be a cinch.

great info, thanks all round guys! I just googled mountain boards - now that bought a twinkle to the eye lol.

should person weight/size be a guide with trainers also? (say should a pretty small/50kg person go for smaller option?)

Yes, if you are around 50kg, then definitely go the 1.5 size.
There is no need to do landboarding, to learn kitesurfing, but it does help with the transition to water for sure.

If you are wanting the kite to pull you on a landboard in lighter winds you will need to go a bit larger. 3m minimum
The larger trainers will also fly in less wind.

I just had my first play on the trainer kite.. (the day it arrive the wind vacated, then returned at gale force, now today perfect finally..lol)

holy !$#@ it was so much fun! Can't wait to do the real thing now

I went with the Ozone ImpIII 2.5m which is spot on (thanks Darren!) - wind around 8 knots - still had me on my toes at times

Highly reccommend trainer kite (even just for a bit of fun ;)
