Hello folks. I need a device, and I'm wondering what comes close. Basically I want to do long distance kiting, and there's not always someone around, with the exception of someone on the shore. So...

* GPS tracking, accurate, live, shareable, watchable from shore on a phone
* Record some stats - location and time
* Preference to be able to send a message, even automated, if in trouble. In some way to communicate an issue if I'm out of line of sight.

I'm thinking... a phone? But how's the GPS and mobile signal tracking out past the shoreline?
Something else?

GPS is it's own thing, doesn't rely on the cell network.

Don't know about cell coverage for rescue... surely there are maps that show it in your area? And a clear line of sight should help too.

Sounds like you want an Apple Watch or something

Spot tracker if you're serious about it but expensive if you're not using it too often. have used these for ocean crossings and backcountry expeds and they work great.

otherwise, apple watch +PLB. watch will record stats, can share your location and do a phone call if you are within cell range (can text with siri as well), back it up with a personal locator beacon for when you're out of cell coverage. you can put your details (journey, kite type etc) on AMSA's rego site and when that PLB number goes off they will have all the info and exact location and will contact your listed emergency contact.

If you're going offshore you should have the PLB anyway to meet marine safety requirements, couple of hundred bucks well worth it.

I have a Garmin Fenix 6 and it does most of the things you want. It will record your session with GPS and provide you with stats, it does have a live track function you can share with someone so they can follow you along. However, I'm not really sure what that actually looks like as I've never used it.
