And what can we do about it. Cars need fuel and people need food. I'm a bit of an IGA fan myself.

cant see why they would send a hit man, it was all based on facts!

the fact that farmers get so little is a joke in this country.

Thank you prawn star - hopefully the reality of the situation will dawn on some out there.

I hadn't realised they were so deep in pubs and POKIES.

Grrr!!! Now I REALLY hate Moles and Foolies and will be extracting the digit even more so to go elsewhere.[}:)]

I'm a farmer and you won't find any of my produce in coles or woollies. Heard too many stories from other growers about broken contracts. As soon as they can get it cheaper from elsewhere they screw u over. Expect fruit and Veg prices to have a massive spike in the not to distant future, as by screwing over farmers now they are just setting themselves up for limited supply down the track (half the farmers will have gone broke!)

IGA and the small independents for the win!

That was quality. Thanks for posting.

The internet is a great leveler. Shop online, beat the GST and more importantly beat the hype that by saving some money, rather than fueling the cartels, you are somehow being Un-Australian.

Or you can support your local billionaire who rips you off whilst screwing your local farmer and importing goods from overseas.

Fresh food people? My arse!

Oooooh I am all hot under the collar now.

Aldie's cheaper anyway.
Some of the food there tastes a bit like rubber, but hey- you don't die from it.
The misses and I are saving about $50 a week by shopping there.
Ummm.....what's this got to do with kitesurfing?

I use Aussie Farmers Direct for the main groceries ( order online for delivery )
www.aussiefarmers.com.au/

for other stuff

I go to IGA !
I pay slightly more at times
but its closer to home

Woolies and coles are the tip of the iceburg........... what they do to our farmers is disgusting....... people are leaving their farms in droves, teenagers are moving from country towns because there is no work, leaving the towns with little future.

unless farming becomes profitable again ...we are headed down a slippery slope and these two are responsible for a great deal of it.

Unless the consumer makes a stand...we will all pay for it in the future. ie: Super Farms run by Coles or Woolies, produce sourced from overseas.

rant over

My Dad used to own a couple of now IGA supermarkets. I will never shop anywhere for food unless independent. WA was an interesting case in the 1990s as they were pissed they didnt have 80% share, only about 50%. Now things have changed, and the cost of food went up 19.3% last year... Couldnt watch the clip, but I will. Predatory tactics towards smaller businesses have got them busted many times, yet the piddly fines make it actually an investment in the long run...

I'm looking forward to the 5 new Costco Supermarkets planned this year in Sydney. I know you guys are thinking, "ohh no, not another big American franchise coming into Australia". Let me tell you, they will shake up the supermarket industry here. More competition = cheaper prices for the consumer.

It's also known that Costco is almost a year behind their planned rollout schedule because Coles and Woolies have been fighting them in court to keep them out.

I think Australian's are finally sick of getting ripped off for nearly everything we buy in this country. It's about time the retail industry gets a little shakup.

As a native Los Angelino, I say bring in the Mexicans and we'll all have cheap strawberries ;)
