BTW A 5'6" board is really small for a big guy like you.
More BTW Riding among the waves (strapped) is easy and fun. Actually catching a wave and shutting down the kite and surfing the wave is really hard. Getting a wind direction that complements the wave direction is pretty rare unless you actively search out wave spots.
Yes Gorgo, it is a small board for me so here is the theory:
1. It fits in my car (no roof racks possible).
2. I am more interested in KITEsurfing than pure surfing so I expect to be powered most of the time. I will never be a big big wave guy and mostly wanted to surf the small bay chop in melbourne.
3. I also still wanted to jump with it, so the less to blow about in the wind was also important. However I found that I don't like jumping with a surfboard and so I reserve that pleasure for my twin tip.
Riding it strapped, I could never get the straps comfy or right. If I came off I felt the surf straps/grip pads were less forgiving and I am prone to injury!! Also it was too hard to get my feet OUT and in, whilst gybing. Since taking them off I find the small board performs much better as I can put my feet exactly in the right place and thus it's more comfy/better. I really have enjoyed the challenge of learning to ride strapless and changing feet - just for the sake of it - I suppose.
Maybe I would do better on a larger board but I don't want to buy a new car for it

Thanks for your input - it's appreciated.
