Hi all

Q. Looking to buy a Shinn monk twin tip. I am 75kg and ride in choppy (Perth) water. What size board would you recommend? currently on crazy fly all rounder 135/40.

Cheers

Everyone froths over the Shinn monk, I think it's crap.
So sloppy and bendy.

Try a North Jaimie or a Team Series - same sort of price, but you get a stiffer, more lively board that doesn't feel sloppy and awful.
Team series will need a bit more grunt because its got rocker

Hi TouchFM,

You could ride either the 133 or the 135 at your weight. Both will work perfectly.

The Monk and the North Team Series couldn't be further apart in terms of their characteristics. The Monk is a soft freeride board designed for maximum hold in very rough conditions. In terms of a flat out high speed carving turn in choppy waters, the Team Series is crap, you'll never hold an edge, if stomping a kite low, front roll or popping off the water in flat conditions to crank a front mobe, the Monk is crap.

A bit like saying a Porsche 911 GT RSR is crap for driving on the beach to Wedge island and an 80 series Landcruiser is crap for racing Le Mans.

Darren, have you had any feedback with super heavy weights on the 137 Monk?

I wouldn't be that bothered about stepping up a size on the monk as per weight,
It holds an edge beautifully and grips as hard as you want, this is a plus for the lighter days as you'll have a bit more
It's a butter soft ride and gives zero spray, I've recommended the monk to heaps of kiters and hand on heart I've not had any bad feed back
It will feel a bit different compared to your current board, it's just you've not rode a board with that amount of flex= comfort, it a fast board too if you put the hammer down, does lack that stiffness in the tips for true pop but can be charged up with respectable jumps
I'd demo the 135 from the boys at action sports
I still have the original and have thrashed it, snowboard technology in the build means you'll have no issues
Enjoy

Thanks for the feedback guys. I am going for the board because of the great reviews from some of the local guys.
OK so its either Monk 132 X 41 or a 135 x 42
I guess it come down to rider weight, as I said I am roughly 75kg - 77kg - ish So which size board would you be going for??

If you lived in the Midwest the 132 in Perth the 135, just grab a demo, job done no guessing and wrong decision making
Shinnworld has a what board size categories
Or mark shinn has been known to respond to emails asking for board and size advice
Don't forget kite choice is also highly relevant in board choice due to power delivery

Got some email feedback from Mark Shinn
He also recommend the Ronson board :

Both boards are cross over but the Ronson has more POP for freestyle.
The ADHD is our most specialised Freestyle board but IMHO Ronson is best for 90% of riders for freestyle as it handles the chop very well indeed and it’s easy to get really good pop on.

Just read Darrens review on the board. Looks Interesting. Think a demo is in order.

With regards board size on the monks, just bear in mind that they are typically 1cm wider than equivalent length boards. Which means you can generally go 1 size smaller.
In demo I think we have
Monk 135
Bronnq 135
Ronson 138

My guesstimate would be the 135 for the extra few kg's in weight...

Better to ask the what size and get a response from WA riders rather than the guys in not so windy QLD, in our experience at that weight 131 or 133 depending on where you are looking at riding at 96 kilos I would comfortably ride the 135 in perth winds.
Try the 135 we have in demo but I am betting you'll go smaller!!
