I wonder how much the camera effected the behavior of the lines, causing them to slack.
From the YouTube video description:
This video shows what can happen when you cross over your kite lines with your board. A GoPro was on the middle lines,
when the lines went slack, the weight of the GoPro pulled the lines under the water. The result was the lines becoming tangled around the board and relaunching the rider into the air, coming down with a huge impact and resulting in a compound fracture to the leg. Broken in 4 places and repaired with a steel rod and screws.
A very unlucky scenario... however, broken bones is a lucky escape given the circumstances: drowning would've been a definite possiblity...
GoPro line mounts can definitely impact the functionality of the safety system as well as being a further source of potential tangle. I think that's the main lesson to learn from this video.
The kiter himself said '' No more boots for me..'' Must've been very frightening not being able to get the feet out of the board
I guess this raises the debate about hook knives again, but as Underoath related in his tangle experience with boots, the question is would you be able to reach for the knife and cut the lines...? knowing that with a small ''harness type'' hook knife you can only cut the thinner part of the lines which is usually above the trim line on the front lines and sometimes further away on the back lines as well.
