I currently live less then a minute from the local spot (Australind), but I work a while away in town(for myself). I would love to put a wind meter on the house for the reason that, If I'm gonna commit to doing a Tina Turner from work I will know the conditions will be ok (ish) last season I done it quite a few times only to be disappointed (then roped into silly house work FML), This year I would love some live data rather then counting on the liar one at the local airport 15kms in land saying its 17-20 knots getting home and finding it's nowhere near that. Where do I get a wind meter and how does one go about putting the info online (in real time) is there an app I can hook it up to so all can share the Stoke ? (Few more brackets)

Don't worry about that mate...I will give you a live sms reading from that location everyday. Knocking off from work at 3 o'clock everyday during summer has those advantages.

I've done my share of research regarding online wind meters and yes you have fairly cheap options available that are great for the house, having a wifi signal nearby. However, they fall in the ''amateur'' category and I have my doubts about their accuracy and long-term reliability and from what I read they do fail and you have to service them once in a while.

I really like the ultrasonic sensors (no moving parts) it has very high accuracy and their units are completely standalone, just pop in a SIM card and that's it, the unit runs off solar power and battery. It'll set you back about $1000 Euros however but I think it's a good long-term investment. Similar professional units are much more expensive. There are about 10 of these stations installed in Australia already, here's an example: holfuy.com/en/data/156

The holfuy units are simply the cheapest professional 3G stations I've found WorldWide, if you look at their stations lists, you'll find airports, ski resorts, etc. are using them

I started building my own GSM windmeter that I am trialing now because it costs about 10% of the davis ones. The GSM network shuts down in december though :( It'll be back to the drawing board for 3G. If I get the 3G module working I'll try and pass it on.
