Hi all,

I need some (pref unbiased) opinions on upgrading to a safer kit. For those that came late www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=44499&SearchTerms=kitemare I had a recent skidmark inducing experience that has lead me seek newer/safer gear.

Other than one quick squirt on the 2006 9m Warroo (which impressed me with smooth low end on the light day) I have only ever flown C kites and I have really enjoyed my old 2005 Best Yargas (smooth, steady, great relaunch and 5th line safety) but am convinced 100% depower on the bar is an absolute neccesity.

Anyhoo I am looking for a 2008 kite (hoping to find a new 2008 kite lonely on the shop shelf) that has 100% depower on the bar, is very well behaved, relaunches very well and is kinda C kite in bahaviuor as I love the way my old Yargas boost, handle in small waves etc etc. I want more wind range than a C though but simplicity if poss.

I guess I am angling towards a hybrid for familiarity and less hassles with pullies/maintenance etc.

I don't want this thread to be a bows/Cs/Hybrids are for kooks type of show and am open to a bow (or other) if it fills the brief.

BTW I am 80+ kgs and ride a 136 twinny (also a 151 twinny for light days) soley in the Perf metro coast. Downwinder are the go for me mostly.

I am looking for a 12/11m + 9/8m quiver and due to scarse funds will most likely have to go 2nd hand on at least one kite.

Oh if any reatailer want to suggest a kite then please PM me.

mate get your self a cabrinha SB3. 12mtr. i think kitepower in Sydney still have some brand new ones at run out prices. they are awesome kites. im 60kg and fly my 10 SB3 from 12kts to 30+knts. they are awesome and relaunch so easy and the depower is awesome almost 100% i think but not sure. get one!

dude im 75kgs, and i'm way overpowered on my 8m SB3 when it hits 30knots.

Thats some powered riding you must be into!!!

however, I agree that the SB3's are a great, hassel free and safe kite.

An 8 and a 10m SB3 quiver (thats what i own) will have you downwinding it from floz-brighton in 15-30knots.
one pump system, a great relaunch and super grunt are some positives.

Have Cab addressed the dodgy sewing on their previous models?

I don't usually get into brand bashing (every one used to alledge Best were rubbish quality and I pummelled my Best kites for 3 seasons and they were tough as f**k!) but I have talked to several newbs who have had their Cabs split right down the main seem. One guy said it happened in mild conditions doing stuff all at the time just standing on the beach.

As I said I will keep an open mind for sure though as they are no doubt safer than my current kit.

yeah i know. i love riding well powered up. you get massive boost and the hang time of these SB3 are amazing. ride powered up or go home.

i havent heard that. the only problem ive had with my SB3 is the depower strap snapped the other day and it is only 6 months old. other than that its been the safest and best kite ive owned.

both.

surfboard on the 10m from 14kn and on the 8m from 18knots.
twinny on the 10m from 15-20knots and 8m from 20kn.

Scuse my ignorance fella but is the SB or CB more geared to surf kiting?

Also how is the bar pressure on the SBs? I have had RSI issues in the past and whilst i like a grunty C kite am not keen on heavy bar pressure.

Coming from C kites you may be disappointed with the turning speed on the SB. Its grunty but it just doesn't turn quite as fast as kites like the Rebel, Nemi Pro, Rev or Furia.

If you had an old C kite, then this is obviously not an issue.

dont get a sb3 if you dont want pullys. the things got 8 on the kite end alone.
there are kites out there that have a simple bar, no pullys, 100% de-power and a wind range of 13 to 34 knots at your weight. im just not sure weather you can get genetrix gear in WA.

The SB3 will not be all that great in the surf as it is a little slow turning......The IDS would be much more suitable- haven't ridden the others so can't say. Maybe liquid force might be worth a look or the rev- have flown them and they seem pretty good.

Bar pressure on any of the kites I have mentioned is light.

If you are going the CAB SB3 DO NOT BUY a 12m they are good kites but the 12m is the pig of the range....

A 10m SB3 is the way to go.......

I am also 80kg and ride an 8m a 10m and a 12m the 12m is sloooooooooooow since i bought the 10m I dont use the 12 at all.

PS : I ride a 126 Shinn Twin ( a much smaller board than you) so you should have no problems with a 10m at all. I ride it from 15-28knots

If you dont like Cabrinha try the Slingshot REV also great kites very similar..... dont have much experience with the wind range however but they do have a more c kite feel and great quality


Kiterzak....... if you are 60kg I highly highly doubt you can ride a SB3 10m in 30knots plus ( as you claim ) ..... I am 80kg always ride superpowered up and 30knots is towards the upper limit on my 8m SB3....

when giving advice keep the claims real guys

8 pulleys are on the IDS not the SB3 ( no longer made by ronstan) and a wind range of 13 to 34 knots on the one board ......I would like to witness that

100% agree regarding the IDS much faster turning ....but beware the new 10m IDS has nowhere near the bottom end of the SB3 10m I found out just how much the hard way ie after buying....

the 10m IDS has similar bottom end to my 8m SB3...but for unhooked and faster turning the IDS is far better

i like them cause the are an all-rounder.
i belive the bandit dos and rev would be more your wave-specific kite,
but for perth conditions i really think an 8m and 10m SB3 is the go.

Yeh - decent turning speed would be nice.

I love the agility of my old 2005 9m C - suits me fine. I actually have had it set on the slower turning option and only recently been tempted to go the faster option. Fast but predictable is nice. My 13m i have set on fast and it aint that's for sure.

Point taken on the 10m option as largest for the SB (or most bows I spose) due to the power/size differance for bows.

Yep - true about the CB slop.

An yep - I am after more of an allrounder as I only ride twinnies.

Being an intermediate it would be nice to venture into some larger waves as i progress in future but all rounder is definately where I am at.

Just demo as many different kites from different shops as you can. Its the only way to figure out what you want. :)

Go up to Pinaroo and demo some of the 2008 Ozone Sports or Edges. Well worth the trip. You won't have any problems with bar pressure on these kites. Massive depower, great jumps, pretty fast turning. They are 5 line, but the 2009 models are 4 line if you like that.

theres plenty of guys that have witnessed it harry, and its a 12 meter. dont need to pull on any dp at 30 knots. im 90 kgs

Do retailers still demo 2008 gear?

I assumed they'd flog off their demos as soon as the 09 stuff hit the market.

From what i have seen/read I'd love an Ozone 08 Sport but have blanched at the $$$ and have a pretty meagre budget to cover 2 kites. Will see If i can score a demo though for sure but wanted some opinions to narrow down the options.

claimed wind range for 12m is 10 to 34 knots, im a bit heavier so i can only go upwind in 13 knots. i ride with guys that are going upwind in 10 knots on a 12m we still kite over 30knots with the same kite. im not bullsh1ting

I've been on last seasons Ozones for 3 years now, it's a cheap option! Fits the simple aspect of your brief, and all the rest, but C kite feel wise, not so sure, best demo and see if you like it. There's a few in the buy & sell,

And Kitepower (and maybe Kitehard?) are clearing ex demo kites cheap.
Tops build quality = nice secondhand kites.
I'd suggest Edge 11 and Sport 7. If you even need an 11, try a 9, might be as big as you want.

hydra is smack on, genetrix is the only company that had a dream to make a kite with a massive top end windrange for the radical conditions in france when one day it could blow 60 knots and the next 30 knots, if you dont beleive me just check out kite speed world cup when catman does a speed run in 60 knots on a 7m hydra, these kites are insane when the wind hits 35 knots plus and you will be blown away with how easy strong wind can be.

why the red thumb? all I am saying is the sb3 does not have 8 pulleys. It has none as far as I can remember. Nice kite - grunty, stable and very durable. Just the 12m does turn a little slow especially if used to c's. I think if you are getting a new and a 2nd hand kite i would spend the cash on the bigger kite.

also ss t3's are cheap...you could get two kites and one bar

takoon furia supposed to be super fast and good value
