Hey all you negative nellies, no need to get your knickers all in a knot.
Yeah cyclones are unpredictable but if you have a close look at the videos, you will see that they went kiting well before and well after the actual cyclone hit. Also it hit well north of Townsville so the winds at those times were not that extreme (Townsville only got cat2 winds late at night).
Below are the wind readings at the time of the second video from townsville airport which is 5km away from beach:
03/09:00am... 27.2 20.7 24.0 83 2.2 ENE 65 87 35 47 1004.1 1004.0 -

I would say those are pretty ok 4m conditions. Also who hasnt kited overpowered in gusty winds? I know I have done it many times and come out of it just fine, maybe even having had a little fun.
Both guys are very experienced kiters who would definately have assessed the conditions before heading out, hence the 4m kite, not a 9m. As for safety, they went with a group and all new kites come with excellent safety systems that anyone who knows their ass from their face could operate. If something went wrong they could cut loose.
Kiting is an extreme sport so occasionally you have to get extreme.
Props to psylor.
P.S. What these guys did was much safer then the idiot I saw out on his ladder trying to nail down his roof during the storm.
your first vid of kiting on yasi on tuesday afternoon u claimed 60 knots when the townsville airport showed it steadily building and only just cracking 40 knots in the gusts by 5pm! at 4pm it was 27 - 36
the second video claims 70 knots. look at the right hand column of numbers in your paste from BOM. 40 knots nudgeing 50 in a gust. where do you get 70 knots from? gusts to 50 maybe.. you are talking shxt. the left hand set are numbers are KPH
what you did was silly, not because it was overly dangerous, but because other people (public) and media would perceive it as dangerous and portray kitesurfers in a bad light, further endangering the sensitive palleranda access / powerline issue just so you could puff your chests out and bignote yourselves. What if the ergon management freak out? They are probably a bit twitchy at the moment. You could have gone to bushland or somewhere less sensitive away from power lines.
surely you knew the media would grab a hold of something like that?
