Any tips or advice on visiting Mauritius in June? Staying at Le Morne. Hoping there'll be enough wind to get out in the lagoon. Is Air Mauritius good with transporting golfing equipment?!

June can be a little flukey with lighter wind, but you can usually get a few good days. You can ride downwind at the public beach where the upwing current will assist in lighter winds. The big lagoon upwind of the pass has a current running with the wind and then pushing out through the pass. The prime time is July/August.

Air Mauritius is a great airline, but expect the oversize baggage hit of 125 Euro's each way. There's literally no way around it. You can prepay it online or over the phone, but honestly, I'd just pay it at the airport when you are checking in. Often the flights are at a time when their office is closed if you have to phone someone to verify your pre-payment.

One thing that may be worth looking at if you have the money, is the upgrade to business class where you are allowed an additional piece of luggage. Do your homework because it can make quite a difference cost wise.

DM - thanks - have never been before so that's really useful intel
The last 2 trips I did were a while back to Sri Lanka (2016 & 2018), so if anyone looking for any info let me know.

Have just returned from the trip - wind was good 20-25kts for most of the 6 days. Mix of sunshine and periods of rain/stormy conditions. The kiting spots were superb - I spent most time in the big lagoon upwind of the pass (flatter water and heaps of space). Otherwise, there's very little to do in the Le Morne area, apart from climb up the mountain. Next time, I'd be keen to visit a more developed area, to experience more of the local culture etc. - have been recommended Grand Baie.
I took a 'golf bag' containing 2 kites, board, bar & harness which was within the 23kg weight allowance, so I wasn't charged anything

Hey Froth! TBH I was a bit surprised at how remote that area is from the rest of the Island and there being pretty much nothing down there apart from the small handful of resorts, the epic kiting spot and the mountain. I reckon there'd be a party scene of some sort in the more developed areas in the North and given the topography and climate I reckon there'd be some decent local-grown 'erb to have a go at! Booze and grub are pricey man - same prices as Aus. Not sure about local moonshine but given the amount of sugar cane around the place there'd have to be something going on (in addition to the more mainstream rum that the island is well known for)

There is definitely a party scene in Grand Baie, La Gualette, Tamarin, and Flic En Flac. However, none of these places are close to good kiting except maybe Grand Baie. The Northern lagoon up around Anse La Raie is kind of close to Grand Baie. There are several nice resorts up along the northern coast where the wind is also quite good, mostly flat (choppy) water and even a wave spot if you know where to look.

There is an ION club in the north for good reason. Beaches aren't quite as nice but the lagoon there is quiet and not too many people about. It'd be a short taxi ride into town. Most of the resorts are full board, meaning people tend to stay on resort and dont leave to go to restaurants or bars outside of the walls. This is for good reason as the choice of restaurants and bars in these resorts is pretty damn good and the food and drinks are generally fully covered.

Mauritius is a great place to go, but for partying and kiting, you need to go to some effort.

The only disappointing thing was that I didn't manage to get out and experience any of the local cuisine - the resort grub was decent, but they were clearly catering for their mainly European clientele (understandable), so it never felt like we got to try any authentic Mauritian stuff. As for partying - I mean it wasn't really on the agenda this trip, I was just responding to Froth ...that said I'm a rum lover so again, I would've really enjoyed trying out the local stuff.
...but I agree with you, it's a great place and hopefully one day I might be lucky enough to go again. Kiting in that lagoon with the mountain in the background was something else!
