I am thinking of heading to Maui for my honeymoon. Has anyone kited there recently? Any information on good places to stay and places to kite would be great. How is the Kiting Vibe?

Depends when your honeymoon is but if winter then aitutaki is worth consideration.

There are just a few main areas, paia, kihei, wailea and kaanapali

paia is the hippie town right by the kitesurfing beaches. You could rent a house and step out directly to the beach for kiting. Not so good for spouses.

Kihei is a bit run down and mostly condos. Many of the condos are actually across a street from the beach, some are right on the beach. Sometimes the wind works to kite directly from kihei but mostly you will go to kanaha/kite beach which is about a 15-20 minute drive.

wailea is just south of kihei but still close to kite beach. It has the super luxury resorts that are honeymoon appropriate.

kaanapali (where we usually stay) is the furthest away - maybe 30-35 minutes from kite beach/kanaha. The nicer resorts are the hyatt and the westin. The westin has a ton of children so may not be so good for a honeymoon. The sheraton isnt as nice as the westin but it is at the end of the beach right at black rock and is much quieter. The hyatt is probably the nicest. We usually stay at the sheraton because it is quieter and at the end of the beach. Black rock is nice, but the snorkeling is several orders of magnitude less nice than the great barrier reef.

kaanapali/lahaina feels much more like a resort beach town but is the furthest away from kiting.

Maui is nice because it is a short flight to the US, but since you are in australia, I dont think it is a good value. Your beaches/water will be much nicer than maui.

We go to maui, but if australia didnt cost 3X as much to fly there we would go there.

I might be more inclined to go to indonesia as the cost will be much less than maui, (is it closer?), the beaches and water will be nicer etc.

Dont be discouraged. I reckon its an awesome idea for a honeymoon.

Stay Paia, really great laidback surfing/windsports town on the north shore. Much better vibe than a lot of the rest of the island which is more geared to big resorts for the American holidaymakers. But those spots are fun to visit for snorkelling etc.

My gf at the time (now wife) had our first holiday there, and she learned to kite in 25-30 with good quality lessons.

Definitely agree with the Aitutaki idea too - would be excellent for honeymoon, its not as consistently windy though. Depends when you are going as to which will be better (for wind anyway).

Its different to Australia because in the season it blows pretty much every day.
