wishy said..
I can't see how someone riding a windswept 2 foot dismal sloppy wave should have right of way over someone lining up that crappy wave as a righteous aerial ramp in 35 knots. I think this rule should only apply if the wave is decent.
Is there any rule where you have to bear off if someone stays airborne way longer than they were expecting to, and looks like they might cannonball you?
It is interesting you mention that, for a couple of reasons IMHO
(1) the rule about guy getting off the beach has ROW and then the guy on the wave has ROW gets really interesting. We can understand why for kiting, but windsurfing and surfing is different so we all need to understand the others too.
The old surf rule about guy on the wave has priority was modified a loonnng tome ago in windsurfing land as it is hard to get out at cross-off spots in big waves (and we can't go under them lol) ............... so kiters need to be aware of that - in some classic big wave riding spots windsurfers will think the guy going out has ROW
but not if he is planing and has an optimal jump. The ROW is all about making it easy for the guy heading out so he does not get smashed but it is still wave rider priority.
In WA coming in is starboard tack = ROW and also wave riding coming in = ROW so there is the double whammy. BUT again, not if it is big and a windsurfer heading out is not planing and has to avoid the section.
(2) a 2ft slop spot is not a 'wave riding spot' so has to revert to port vs starboard rule surely? So yup, agree there. Seems local rules reflect this too as a "proper" wave spot will have local rules for that
Thus I think new to waves people need to ask about local rules, as the 2ft slop spot will be different to Ho'okipa rules.
I also think its all about letting the other people have fun and not having a collision!!! I do get a bit tired of giving people a wave when they have ROW and then they are just mowing the lawn.
Like yesterdays genius, baldy at Coronations who dropped in on my wave, got in my way was slower then me AND then when I gave him the wave as I didn't want the hassle he didn't even ride the fker. Buggered it up for me then peeled off.

Just obey (1) starboard ROW on the flats, (2) wave rider priority unless the guy heading out will get smashed if you enforce your wave riding ROW. How easy is that!!!!
