wow would love to head up there this winter with the family. Can anyone give any recommendations on where to stay with access to kiting. looks amazing.
Hi James, I am from Perth so had extremely limited info on the area itself. You can stay on the islands, day dream, HAMILTON or Hayman (most expensive) or on the main land, Airlie beach, which is where we stayed.
Airlie is a little town mainly filled with back packers and it's awesome, heaps of stuff going on pubs clubs etc.
to get out to whitehaven you probably could foil you way out but it's a fair distance so I wouldn't recommend. Wind is predominately SE so big tack up wind from Airlie. Other and safer option would be to ferry it out there but then you only get a short period of time on Whitehaven.
best choice would be to hire or take your own boat out there that way you could explore and have a boat to save you as it's offshore.
no waves but plenty of flat water and amazing scenery.
there was plenty of wind the whole past week there 15-20 knots but the islands are tall and create big shadows. I guess you can kite from any point but it's really gusty and choppy so foiling would be you best shot.
One spot that may good for twin tip/ freestyle is just off black island when the tide is low. Heaps of turtle there as well. There is a big sand bar that forms that makes super flat water.
