i wouldnt say so... ive surfed all over there and also kited a bit. the few times ive passed through that area by boat there was no wind at all in comparison to when ive been to sumbawa and bali. would say its maily due to the direction as the wind mostly comes from the south east and you will be on thr wrong side of lombok and mainly get offshore light breezes.
It would be similar to when i stayed in west sumbawa where the wind was cross offshore everyday and just to light to get a kite in but the surf is epic. however when we scootered round to lakey's which is more on the south side of sumbawa the wind comes from the south/east (almost off the water) and is heaps stronger.
however ive never stayed at the gillies for longer than a night on the boat so am only speculating!
by the way deserts in lombok is amazing
