Just say you wanted to design a kitetrap.

What would this thing look like ?

I'm talking about some crazy device that stands on the beach,

and is capable of catching a flying kite safely with no damage to the gear.

An apparatus in place of a kite bitch, in other words.

[And please don't mention tethering systems for self-landing].

It could be something as simple as a wheelie bin half-filled with sand ...

and fixed to the lid might be a coiled spring-like flexy extention that could possibly snare bridle lines as they fly by.

The reason I ask is this.

I was checking out this dude who was way up the beach from me.

I could tell he was purposely pushing his maxed-out kite into the bushes as well as a fence,

in a desperate attempt to land his kite in the strong frontal weather.

A kiter nearer to him eventually gave assistance and the outcome was good.

Just build a castle and hang it on that.

^^^^^^Great vid. Best Ive watched for ages^^^^^^^

A good soft shrub or coconut trees if you don't have a castle. But I'd be looking at something that blocked the wind first, to land in the lee, before I went all plant crazy. Pretend your dune care or form a local caring kiters dune care group and erect a couple post with some shade cloth.

That's not a castle it's a public toilet jock style, some great looking spots around there , this is north uist island tirree is another top spot kite able from multiple wind directions, I might build one of these at my local spot to keep invading kiters away

It used to be a good technique to land a foil. Self land in the usual way and let the bridles catch on a shrub for added security. I still do it with a paraglider in stronger winds.

Damn you Waveslave, I couldn't stop thinking about a possible way to do it, came up with this using a cable track sprung like a finger to hold leading edge under main strut.
Pull the kite out to launch which cocks the finger open ready to receive and grip kite when trigger pushed on landing.

How did you model the kite? Just drew it in solid works? or do you have a software such as surf plan?

Nice, a landing mast. Now the kite just needs to filled with hydrogen and you get proper hindenburging.

I used INVENTOR similar to SOLIDWORKS, just made a pretty basic model didn't want to spend too much time on it, I can send you a Step or Sat file of it if you want.

maybe just go to leash like the rest of us, instead of trying to invent a large stationery object that would require a lot of skill and control to even get near unless you were trying to avoid it

And of course you are absolutely right. ^^^

Just squeeze the trigger and kill the pull.

But how many kiters are out there that have actually never pulled the trigger ever ?

Lots and lots, are you surprised ?

We should have a poll on this forum.

And the question would be :

Have you ever pulled the trigger ? Be honest. Yes or No.

Yes, heaps of times. I'll be the 1st to answer your question Slavey

Especially in random spots when there alone with no other choice

But I doubt I'd be wanting one of those things ^^^ bouncing around in the back of my rig with all my gear on the way there and back

yes have pulled on various occasions over many years, mostly worked, had some failures as well, tend to pull my safety to check the system every 2-3rd kite to make sure everything is working, as a safety that has not been used can sometimes jam to create problems as well as actually training to activate the system.
