can anyone give me some info on when the best times of year are for riding in Darwin, and what sort of wind strengths/ directions to expect?

buy a jeep for the trip north, then you wont get disappointed on darwins wind reliability on a pro rata basis

... yes that was Jalan Jalan at Lee Point,,,, of course we swung by the aft deck for our obligatory beer while kiting,,,, it would have been rude not too!! yeah, the guppy at the end of the vid was meant to be an inside joke that was never meant to stay in the cut,,,, forgot to delete that bit,,,, bit silly now as the joke is gone and forgotten!

ps I've had approximately 145 sessions this year so far and averaging 30 km's per session so with appropriate gear you can get plenty.

14 and up. most days. 9 and up when the wet season westerlies kick in.

I lived up in Darwin many years ago and had a slalom sailboard with a 7 metre sail. This got me planing on most days, especially the dry season. As you probably know, kites do even better in light winds, so as someone else said, take your biggest kite. I have a 17m Fat Lady and I reckon that and a surfboard would be a perfect combination.

Just to add:

if you wanna cover all eventualities then your quiver should be biased to the bigger end of the scale ie 17/18m, 14/12m and 9m is a common quiver. A Nugget or big TT with something smaller for the 9m type days is good and of course a really really good eski.

i go to darwin at least once a year to visit family, always take a kite and i have always used my kite. i usually go up around june or july and the last few times iv kited almost every day on my 12. lee point is my favorite spot theres some sick little kickers that role threw. but where you kite just depends on wind direction like anywhere else.

When i saw the name of the topic i thought i would see video of some retard selflaunching 17m lei straight downwind into power lines at about 25 kts ;D

... Lee Point actually works in a westerly too, and I only recently discovered its true potential,,,,, damn I can't believe we've wasted this spot for all these years!!

For a couple weeks now I've been doing a few sunset downwinders to Lee Point (from Rapid Creek) and with wind completely opposite direction to the dry season, you get the flat water on the other side of the rocks/reef with the same kickers. Plus, it was slightly winder than our usual spot by only a few knots, so if we time the tides right,,,,, its gunna be an epic spot in the wetseason,,,,, not for beginners mind you. Oh and btw, this is the same spot old mate had his dance with the croc so ya got to keep your eyes open!

Torquay only 5 hrs away Eddie, seabreezes have been kicking in, looks like a good summer coming, hitch a ride up with HAAK, cold beer guaranteed.

Yeah thanks Col. Will have to get onto HAAK . Be good to try some of thE spots south of Robe

You take your largest kite not in hopes of there being enough winds, rather you take it so you can use it for shelter.

... good observation HAAK.... I did a solo sunset downwinder and bloody mongrel kids were late because they forgot to pick me up so I started to walk home,,,, in the dark with mozzies the size of small dogs,,, pink line ended where I got picked up!!
