im in the market for some new kites and have been thinking of going the second hand option. However, there seems to be some very ambitious pricing going on in the buy/sell section.

Just wondering what everyones opinion is of second hand kite value. Im seeing some 2009 used kites wanting to sell for 1600-1800, which to me is the price you can get close to buying new with some negotiation.

I was thinking with no repairs

2009 kites used 900-1200
2008 kites used 700-900
2007 really comes down to the condition

am i being realistic?

Also what sort of value drop do you think a repair has on the value?

The prob with second hand is you dont really know how much the kite has been smacked about. To an unexperienced eye, a flogged kite may look in great condition. Get some advice before buying second hand gear, and make sure you have a chance to test for your self.

This time of year you will probably get a bargain on new or ex demo gear. This may cost a few hundered more but I feel it is worth it because you would get a new kite and warranty with it. Service is priceless.

On the other hand if you do chose to go second hand, i think the below would be the asking price for a non damaged or repaired kites

2009 kites used 1200-1400
2008 kites used 800-1000
2007 really comes down to the condition

I think you are being very realistic given the amount of second hand gear available. Wait until September and you will get even better 2nd hand deals.

I would not be dropping $1400 on a 2009 model. You would be better off buying 2010 gear. Shop around with cash and you will be surprised on the deals you may find.

I would rather a well repaired strong kite to a tatty weather beaten one.

Professional repairs if done properly make little difference to the overall kite performance.

The new ranges of 2010 'much improved' kites will be out soon and you will be able to get about 25% off brand new 'far inferior' 2009 kites.
This is usually a good option provided you can find the size you want in the model you want.

It's been used and abused, ridden hard and slapped around !!!!

2yr old, $600
3yr old, six pack or a gratuitous sexual act.

Just because a second hand kite is last year doesn't mean that they are worth less then 50% of the cost of a new one.

The average price of a second hand kite in really good nick with no repairs should be about 35 - 45% of original price.

So that makes them about $1300 top wack.

That being said each kite should be taken on condition of the kite and how much it has been used. . A 09 9m that is most used kite and should consider offers around $1000 but for something like a 7m that is only used about 7 times in the year is nearly new you should expect a little more.

That all being said it is a buyers market and depends on what brand and comparisons are out there.

The problem with you lot is that you don't want to pay full price for brand new but then try and flog the arse out of the second hand market.

That just makes it impossible for retailers to make a living because who wants to buy a kite and then walk out the shop loosing more than 50%.

good to see that there is some agreement to the price of 2nd hand gear. I agree that condition is a big factor, but does anyone else feel that there is a disproportionate number of kiters who are buying brand new kites, only flying them 4 times, and then hanging onto them until the season is well and truly over?

I think some ppl out there have to accept that gear loses a large amount of value in its first year. I just sold my kites for around 60% of what i bought them for a year ago, and i dont think i would have been to offload them for anything higher. Besides, works out to be around $23 a week in depreciation, a figure im happy to pay to keep in the latest gear.

Guess its time to start haggling

So what is the going rate for last years boards ?
I have a 12m 09 kite and a 136cm board also 09, what should I expect to get for them ?

My partner just got a used 7m kite out of the Seabreeze buy and sell for $850 or so (rrp is $1900 new with bar) and I think it was a fair deal it is in good condition - but didn't come with a bar or pump.

Think of a new kite like a new computer - every 3 months something newer, flasher and faster comes out. Meaning your older, uglier, slower piece of crap that you've kicked, spilled coffee on, draged across a beach/reef and generally beaten up should depreciate around 9-12.5% every quarter or so.

Don't worry there not missing - they where never there. Cab's where the only kites in 2005 with a bridle

I think your pretty on the money for used kite values(pardon the pun). the
bad thing about the 2nd hand market is that unless you are able to personally inspect the kite you just have to take it in good faith that the seller is telling the truth about the kites usage.Have you ever noticed how many people are selling year old kites that they claim have only been flown 6 times!.

Obviously a kite that has been used 20 times would be prefered to a kite that has been used 100 times and dragged across beaches ect. But it is funny how different models eg bandit dos all r on sale for about the same price regardless of there useage. Also given that most kiters(using a kite say 50x a year) would not realistically expect to get more than about 4-5 years use out of a kite before it dies, I think to try and sell a season old kite for $1500 is very optimistic. People should accept that buying a new kite comes with maximum depreciation of at least 40% in the first year, otherwise wheres the incentive to buy 2nd hand if the kite depreciates at the same value every year of it's life?

I must admit Ive been a bit lucky,

In 2008 I bought a 08 10m Airush Flow complete & used half a dozen times/as new, the bar & lines were unused and still wrapped in plastic, for $800
In 2009 I bought a 09 12 m Airush Flow FT complete & used once/as new for $750

Sometimes its worth looking around and making an offer.

Thanks for your response loco4olas. I have had a lesson or two on cabrinhas and the consensus among my friends and coach is that this 2005 kite is quite likely to beat the **** out of me. Might have to save up for a nice easy to use one before I go out kiting.

Fozzy- I think you have alzheimers or something similar, after all, you are a bit older and slower !

If I can get $600 for last years board and $1100 for last years kite I will be happy..... fair enough the condition and usage are a factor.

Maybe we need a red book - like for cars, a guide for good condition high price down to poor condition low price.

Popularity of a model and the materials durability and possibly even the original price could all be factors....

Interesting how regardless of age, they are going to give you the same trade in price on a new kite. Perhaps an indicator that once a kite is the last season, it has lost the majority of its value.

I was just starting to be able to stay upwind when I picked up a second hand 05 Rhino 12m.

It taught me a lesson in the form of a nasty gash to the head from my board and 5 stitches - it went to a more experienced owner shortly thereafter.
