I'm a beginner (I had a bunch of lessons) and I purchased the equipment brand new lately (not used yet), but now I'm thinking that I might have made a mistake with the kite size. I'm a light weight (64kg) and I live in a place where the wind is moderate most of the time (11-16 kts), so I bought a Naish Triad 12m. With my weight and being a beginner, I wonder if I should have got something like 11m if not 10m. Changing size now would be a pain, but even worse could be trying it and discovering that it's way too big.

You definitely will use it for those lighter days. It will help you learn better having the right size for the right days. There is nothing harder than being too underpowered when you are learning.

You will need a 9 at some point as well though. BTW if you are living in WA, you need far smaller kites.

Best advice would've been the advice given by your own instructor, based on their familiarity with your skills and local conditions. Also, check suitability of conditions on any given days with experienced kiters at your beach. However, for your weight and stated wind range, I think your 12m will be a very useful size to begin with. inevitably supplemented over time with other sizes for different conditions!

Even if you are light weight, a 12m kite size makes perfect sense for 10-15 knots winds.

Many other factors need to be taken in considerion as well. As mentioned by Sandee, check with other people in your local area who will give you better advice based on your local conditions.

You need to consider other factors such as as wind density and consistency, shallow water vs deep water, etc.

Like most kiters, you will eventually end up getting multiple kite sizes. Your next size should be something like a 9m kite for winds above 15 knots.

As you can see it already suggests a 12m kite for your weight and wind conditions.


If you slide the wind speed from 12-22 knots for example, you will see it suggests a 9m + 12m kite.
