Was thinking about booking Fiji up for december at Xmas time, wanted a chill out on the beach with kitesurf stuff close by.
Was wondering if anyone has any info on the conditions, wind speeds etc, also do you advice to take own equipment or is it easier and cheaper to hire over there? Obviously prefer my own gear.
I think it's the wrong time of year for the Tradewinds. You may end up with a wind less holiday. Take your gear. I don't think that stuff is readily on hire.
I was there in July/August and the wind was pretty light each day, had some 20knot plus days though. I think Fiji in dec for wind is the wrong time, if it is windy grab your big kite.
with all due respect to fiji, and noting the advice saying it is maybe the wrong time of year - don't book anything (except maybe a snowboarding trip) away from WA in december if you are keen to kite. maybe look at a local holiday (eg head to augusta, set up a tent and enjoy the aussie experience with 25kn for 6 hours a day and sick flat water just walking distance from your tent). i'm not going to lie and say down south is cheap anymore, but you can still spend a week or 2 for less than your flights to fiji if you don't mind the camping experience. or go north to say gero or dongara... or stay in perth...or go half way to augusta...WA = "windy as" that time of year bud.
the winds at the moment are still frontal, or just puffs of seabreezes, but once we hit october yopu should get a feel for what it is going to be like for the next 5 months.
send me a pm if you want the heads up on any other areas.
Thanks allot guys great info, I think I was taken my the beauty of Fiji and forgot to think about wind. So I'm guessing Ozzie winter is the best time to go Fiji. I'll have a look at those locations, really appreciate the heads up
Top tourist caravan or seaspray caravan park in Dongara , right at the beach, constant strong winds , white sand, clear water, very chilled , 6 or so kiters along a 20klm beach,
Went to Malolo Island a few years ago in December, there was suitable wind roughly one or two days per week and we only ever saw one kiter the 3 weeks we were there.
We have just come back from 2 weeks in fiji stayed on treasure island which is in the mamanucas near plantation island. There was heaps of wind, pic is of me on an envy 10.5 i was maxed out. But it comes in waves e.g. 5 days off then 5 days of wind. When the wind came it would have been 15-25 knots from 2 in the arvo till after dark. I believe if you went out to namotu the wind would have been considerably higher from speaking with the locals at our resort. If your not going to stay on namotu best this is to stay in Denarau and catch one of the daily boats out that take the surfers. The return trip i think was about $150 fjd you may be able to get cheaper if you shop around, but if you want to kite.....
I stayed at namotu july/August last year. Would have been great if we scored some wind. Take your surfboad and kite if there's wind. m.facebook.com/Namotufiji
