As previously mentioned in another topic, I am a windsurfer looking at taking on kiting as an addition to my water-sports repertoire.

I have frequently assisted or have seen other people assist kiters to launch or land their kites. I always thought it may have just been a general courtesy thing, however, thinking back it has been a very rare occassion that I have seen someone attempt to launch or land a kite by themselves. Is this such a hard things to do and in fact are two people preferred when kiting?

Not hard at all.... there are a few different methods, depending on the style of kite you fly, it is something you will learn in your first lesson.

Although being a pole dancer.... it may take you a little longer to learn than most!

It's nice to have a friend help launch/land, but by no means is it a necessity. Like anything, you just have to go about it the right way to make sure you do it safely.

It is a cinch to launch and land on your own, however, it is usually a much better and safer practice to get assistance so that it removes most of the margin for error and a failed launch or land.

It is a community thing and shows respect for the beach community by taking the time to get launched more safely so as to have little chance of causing any disturbance.

I have seen many self launches go wrong in my time and the impact it can have on a busy beach can be quite significant. Asssisted launches can also go wrong if the assistant is inexperienced or a non kiter. A very few kiters prefer to self launch due to this issue.

I botched a self launch a couple of months ago and my kite ended up getting sliced in half by a sign in the sand dunes . Having said that, I've done hundreds before that which went fine.

One person to fly and have all the fun, and my kite bitch to root(for me) afterwards/during...get me beer and pie.

And stroke me when I'm sore....hell yesss..it's a 2 person sport!

KB is one and a two person sport, i think its best too have two people just makes it more exciting and if you get in trouble you always have someone to help[:D

I have found that with a self launch that it's critical to have your kite leash attached to a flagging line or 5th line. This has saved me on at least one occasion.

I often go down to the beach after work in summer and kite on my own even if it's for only 45mins. It's really easy to have your gear in the car (unlike windsurf gear) and shoot to the beach after work - the only thing is that you need to be proficient in staying upwind.

I kite whenever i can and nearly always alone.
I would love someone to launch me because it would save me digging in the hard sand/mud at my local beaches.
but as for being a two person sport....... no way.

Solo flying in extreme wind is generally no problem with these kites.

Most of the time it doesn't work....but sometimes.....whoa!

its piss weak to do it on the beach but on the river you need some one to help you otherwise you can damage your kite pretty easily.

I think you mean "piss easy", you'll nail the local lingo soon, just keep trying. Yes, inland kiting is rough business, give me that nice soft sand of a beach any day.

Hey guys we should all really use the buddy system.
Theres always a chance something can go wrong, its so nice when you get into strife and your friend is there to assist.
I never kite alone, no way!

Kiting can be a full-on teamsport if you want it to be....
I've witnessed it many times.
You see kiters arriving in packs, escorted by their entourage.
Kite-bettys at the ready, along with their board-handlers and videographers,
not to mention the anchormen holding onto the backs of harnesses during hot-launches.
It can be a circus some days.

But who would have believed that surfing would oneday morph into a teamsport too ?
I refer to tow-in surfing....
