This thread goes on to talk about personal insurance, which is more what you're getting at i'm guessing.

For interest if you're travelling I use world nomads, they specifically cover kitesurfing and snow kiting (choose your poison as check boxes when booking the policy) and are reasonably priced.

KA membership (if you're living in WA this also makes you a member of WAKSA) means that you have public liability and a small amount of personal injury insurance (including income protection) at any time when kiting. It also covers you overseas with some limitations in North America.

Are you serious? Given the potential to cause an injury kiting, insurance for kiters is a no brainer. Australia is the second most litigious country in the world after the US so having appropriate cover is a wise choice. KAL provides very good value insurance as Alex comments above.

I think its more so the fact that if you kill someone or very seriously injure them it will cover your ass. The Augusta accident thread shows this can happen

Two reasons to have insurance.1. Protect your assets. If you've got nothing then you've got nothing to lose. If you've got a house or any assets of value then you want to protect them in case somebody sues you.

2. Social responsibility. If you seriously damage someone then you really want to be in a position to compensate them. How would you feel if you've left someone in a wheel chair and needing carers and you have no way to help them.

Virtually every other area has some sort of insurance cover (third party car insurance, property insurance, TAC). A hundred and something bucks a year for third party insurance is nothing compared to what can happen without it.

Mate ... I see you kite all the time and an insurance company would be nuts to take you on. I feel sorry for the natural flora and fauna you perpetually batter. Not to mention the rocks, car-parks , roads and other solid immoveable objects you take on without any apparent fear. Also two panadol and six beers to take away the pain does not mean you can go straight back into the water after crashing into a pile of rocks (for normal people)
