I think about this kinda stuff all day and was curious what other people think:

Where is the best place to live in Aus to kitesurf year round? Regardless of cost of living, jobs etc. just somewhere to live & kitesurf as much as possible. (I've heard Cooktown is good).

Really comes down to what disciplines you are choosing, if you're willing to try different things eg kitefoil you can almost kite every day throughout the year in some locations. But light wind kitefoil requires flat water, not surf, so during winter you will need access to a big open area of flat water to be able to use larger kites and foilboards.

And don't forget the kiting crowd, even if you're in the most perfect location, kiting will get boring quick if there is no one else to talk sh!t with on the beach.

Here in Brissy we can get around 300 days kiting a year if your super keen and take everything that is going, but that requires a kitefoil during for lower wind days and the off season, May-September. It also means you might have a morning session during winter before the wind drops in the arvo.

Same in Melbourne. 300 days a year is easy with a kitefoil. You need to live near your spot, have some reliable wind indicators, and be ready to go when it's on.

It gets a bit harder over winter. Not because of the cold, a good wetsuit and booties fixes that. Northerlies are great but often start and finish early. S-W can be good but there's storms to contend with and often the wind comes late and the days are short.

Alternatively, live near a beach that offers a range of options and have the gear to use it. Kitefoil, wingfoil, kitesurf, SUP surf, surf will get you out every day if you want.

Perth is a decent option, from November to March you have the seabreeze that allows you to kite a few times a week usually, and we aren't too far from Augusta and Coronation beach if there is no wind in Perth. The rest of the year it's usually storm kiting so it will depend if you're comfortable with that.

We get it pretty good in the North West seasons change but never end up here

Before talking about wind you first have to ask yourself what your living and working standards are ?

If there are none and you're happy to live remotely and travel to anywhere, anytime, then Western Australia in the summer will have the best wind (September through April if you consider all the kite spots in WA).

For winter, from about June until August you have the most reliable winds North of Cooktown or Cocos Island if you can afford to live there a couple of months a year.

If you need to live close to a Metro city then Perth will give you the most windy days per year

Depending on your age you might want to consider how much driving you're going to have to do to access services, medical care, shopping and the rest.

Most of the people I know who live in country towns for recreational reasons tend to travel during the off season to avoid cabin fever.
