HI Ya,

Ideas on going kiting somewhere warm In australia at the end of July / early August. I have about 2 weeks off work (flexiable on time frame) but have only Kited in Perth for the summer......

So im asking about the better places to kite July / early August????? FNQ / Darwin? or other???

Hey Ash,

Far Far North Queensland like Cooktown is damn windy and very warm. Sweet location. You'll need a wicked camper or similar to stay at somewhere like Archer Point. Just mind the crocs (no joke!).

Try also Karratha up north, they also get decent breeze so I'm told by a long time resident.

Where and how do you get out to them????

Thats the fun part. Its a 7 hour steam from Exmouth or about 4 hours from Onslow however the Islands were used for nuclear testing so you can't stay on the Islands.There are a couple of charter boats which operate there and they provide accommodation on the boat. Your looking at about $400 per day per person for a group of 5. If anyone is keen pm me and we can start putting a charter together.

You leave the glow sticks on the island during the day and they recharge themselves.
But seriously the radiation is less than in the city although any metal on the Islands is highly radioactive(there's some railway and metal plates left there which make a good bbq that you don't need a flame to cook with.)

Hey I'm all for australian products etc but over a grand for four days of camping is a bit exxy if you ask me. red thumb away homos

It may seem expensive, but bare in mind it includes transport from cairns (about 6 hour drive), accommodation at their place the night you arrive), booze, other drinks, food, someone making meals for you all the time (decent meals as well - we had roasts some nights).

When you do the downwinders, they come down in the unimog with drinks, help land your kites and then give you a lift back. While you are out kiting, the guys are taking photos for you.

You can call it camping, but they have freshwater showers, a decent toilet etc so its pretty decent camping, the only thing I'll say is bring ear plugs because the wind does not stop &^$# blowing and it starts getting annoying with the tent flapping. The up side is you are camping less than a 100m from where you kite and 20m away from where you rig up. If you are flying up to cairns, they collect you from the airport as well.

So to put it into perspective, there is minimal you need for the 4 days, no car rental, etc. Best of all, the place they take you to has some of the best flat water I've ever seen, the wind is always blowing and its uncrowded.

We went last year and we are headed back this year again. If it wasn't worth the cash, we'd go elsewhere.

Hey dude you need to check out www.australiankitesurfari.com.au the best kiting in australia as far as im concerned. Its up past cooktown in north queensland and it blows like buggary 24/7. You wont need anything other than your kite gear they supply everything you need. The guys are super friendly and set up so that you are completely safe the whole time your on the water with a rescue boat the only thing you realy need is a bucket load of energy cause you will kite from sun up to sunset check it out drop my name and you will get it a bit cheaper as well!

I would take Far North Queensland any day.

I have been on 3 tours now with Australian Kite Surfari based in Cairns. Last year my ex and I took our first tour with them (Anthony and Rob) and was so impressed I booked another tour date with them 6 weeks later however this time took 3 of my girlfriends with me. We had an absolute blast! There was a constant 25 knot wind, day and night. The guys were so helpful and the hospitality was amazing, we could not have asked for any more.

My girls and I have not long come back from another trip with them only this time we were lucky enough to stay in the free accomodation centre based in Cairns before touring out the following day. You would not believe the most magnificent cedar home completely surrounded by untouched tranquil rainforest. Just incredible!

Their playground is at Cape Flattery just north of Cooktown. This site is not accessable to the general public as it is owned by Tribal Aboriginal Elders who consider it sacred land however fortunately for us Australian Kite Surfari have permission to conduct kitesurfing tours here and for me there is no place on earth that will ever come close.

We have booked again in October and I just cant wait, only this time there will be 6 of us girls going, its becoming a habit actually, maybe Im addicted!
