Cottesloe have installed a fence made of 6 foot pine bollards and thick triple metal wires. What a fantastic way to kill people. I guarantee this will kill someone in the next few years, and when it does happen, I won't hesitate to send photos of the body to all members of the approving council on a weekly basis, every week for the rest of time.


I haven't seen a fence like this anywhere in WA or QLD before, especially not this close to the water. Would love an explanation of the point of it.

And if it is to "protect the dunes" what a fantastic initiative. Let's save some pigface weed and dugiites at the expense of inexperienced teenage kiters lives.


Anyone on a downwinder from Leighton, kiting at Dutchies, or passing through this area please be careful of this fence, it is very low down the beach, and if you make a mistake it has the potential to cause serious damage.

If you do find yourself stuck in Cottesloe in 30+ knots with no-one to help land, remember, you can always crash your kite and get it stitched up for $50. Getting your body stitched up is more like $10,000 and it will hurt for the next 70 years.

On a more serious note, how would you actually design/build some fence to stop people walking over dunes whilst being kite safe?

Am big fan of preventing accidents! Perhaps a Saturday night cut and remove wire schedule in launch area might be more effective. The man is not real smart and he loves fences.

That beach has more than twice the width of sand and less than half the windspeed. Pretty different situation.

Aren't the prevailing winds offshore there too, blowing away from the fence?

I don't think anyone walks on the dunes. There are regularly snakes seen around there and the plants are also really spiky and would shred your feet.

Yep - the fence cant be blamed.
Looks like a heap more spots to self-launch using the ever popular tether method! Good on the council!

WA councils love fences.

Joondalup had them set up along the Hillarys dog beach and Pinaroo Point which is the kite/windsurf beach.

Got washed away in two seasons of Winter storms.

Probably wrapped around some whale and killed it.

More of our money wasted.

Now they're trying to recoup the costs by fining everyone who parks in the rigging area there.

Rigging for what? Kiting? Windfuring?

No-one launches boats there anymore.

Mullaloo used to have fences like that.

Hmmmmm, Yes and not only one. In their infinite wisdom i recall 3 such fences being erected from pinnas to mullaloo by the local council

Why 3 you ask, well the others were washed away by storms exposing timber and sharp metal wires all over the shop. Yep bloody storms in winter. Got to be climate change.

Now you might think sure one was washed away so they replaced it but erecting another fair enough, however, a third pretty much says it all as far as the intellectual capacity of the elected members.

But wait there's more. While the muffins and coffee are being consumed down at Gotham City Hall, the powers to be are feverishly designing a solution the the amazing moving sand dunes on the Perth coast. Bugger me! comes a shrill outburst from the bleachers. Plastic poles. No way a little wind blown sand and some freak winter weather will move those suckers.

Just about time to put a fifth fence up fellas.

Maybe hanging some netting instead of wires? That would probs help to trap a bit more airborne sand too. Not sure what to do about the posts though.... maybe something with a bit of rigidity but also flexible enough to bend if a kitesurfer is powered up into it?

I was thinking the same. At my local, I was thinking of a similar design, but without wires, to help kiters land and launch their kites - complete with carabiner harness straps.

As I said it's a southerly spot. So more active not in summer. Wind speeds can be 20-25kts or 25-35kts. Gusty AF.

No swell here, but I have done more indo trips with $200 flights than you have had hot dinners.

Whilst we are here saying what people "probably" are : You are probably a fat boogeyboarder who thinks that whitewash slamming you over the head is a barrell.

Valid concern.

A bloke has died at this spot.

It is cross on and you will get dragged straight up the beach and straight in to one of those polls faster than you can pull your safety .
The 'cliff' or more hill also gives an updraft that is not 'normal' and an additional factor to deal with if you have an issue . Add some Gusty funky frontal wind and it makes me nervous launching and landing there.

This is a classic example of lazy government!

They are fully aware this is a popular kiting spot and they have recently completed renovations to the area. In the planning stages they had the opportunity to make this safer and more accessible to kiters but if they did that they would be acknowledging and accepting some liability for potential kiting accidents that may occur. So instead they erected a tiny sign with a symbol that could possibly mean no kitesurfing ( or parasailing or erecting gazebos, its hard to tell) and installed more dangers and more obstacles. But when potentially fatal accidents occur in the future it will be the kiters fault for kiting in a spot they shouldn't be and local government will continue to give zero f***s about a group who are at times the majority users of the area.
